Bye-bye FutureShop - gonzo

Future Shop closes all stores, cuts 1,500 jobs in restructuring move.

The Future Shop brand appears to be a thing of the past in Canada, as the technology retailer's parent company moves to rebrand many of its stores under the Best Buy tag.

Best Buy Co., Inc, which owns and operates Future Shop and its competitor, Best Buy, confirmed the shift on Saturday.

In a statement, the company said it would close 66 Future Shop locations ?effective today,? with another 65 stores transitioning to Best Buy locations over the next week.

I never understood why they would place a best buy and a futureshop directly across the road from each other. Seems like it would be more profitable to concentrate on one location rather than paying for 2 buildings.

To prevent another firm of taking the location... Now, " other firms " are gone.

Precisely. Like it said in the story - some FutureShop locations actually shared a parking lot with Best Buy.

We stopped going to FutureShop years ago - the staff were mostly useless, arrogant punks. And they were commission sales...so they were annoyingly in-your-face in the aisles.

The worst was when they were really pushing monster cable for a while. I think they must have had some special incentive for the employees to push that crap because you couldn't buy anything without them trying to upsell you some cables..I remember them trying to sell $150+ 3 foot optical cables.

its only a matter of time before bestbuy stores are gone and only online remains.

I doubt it. They'll continue to adapt & re-structure with the changing times. There are still people like myself who prefer a B&M store where they can look at the actual products on the shelf and talk to a salesperson. Our local Best Buy has quite a few very knowledgeable sales staff who have been very helpful over the years with advice. Lately they've even had a few product reps in-store to help - a few months back they had a Samsung employee who was extremely helpful when we were buying a pair of tablets.

sure but they've said before that the can't compete with the online discount electronic sites. both bestbuy and futureshop were always busy around here. maybe over time they'll reduce stores but what a lot of people tend to do is check out an item in person and then go online and buy it cheaper somewhere else.

Monster was offering Spifs (Sales Performance Incentive Funds) for selling monster products. The cost was super low, like 5-6 bux for a 100 dollar cable. Sales staff usually enjoyed a good 10-15 dollar spif for it. Since the cost vs ticket price was so vast in difference, it also boosted sales profit numbers and helped keep product experts in the "green" for accessory attachment and GM (general margin).

Thats wierd. The Best Buy closed across the street from the Futureshop near me, not the other way around.
