Do i really need 1GBPS uplink port on dedicated server ?

hi all.,

i am getting new dedicated box, for my new project.

majority static content is serverd from CDN, so dedicated box is for php + nginx+ mysql ,
and i hav enabled gzip compression in nginx.

the dedicated box comes with 100 mbps uplink port,

my avg page size is about 5-8 kb as shown in firefox ,

so i can server i guess near about 3k pages at the same time, on 100 mbps, thats more than enouh for startup site.

or am i missing something else ?

so do i really need 1gbps uplink port ? there is extra 75 bucks per month for 1gbps uplink port upgrade .

so what do you think ?

I have no idea about what your stats mean but I am a numbers guy...

75 bucks per month extra is $900 per year.... you should talk to people overseas about what you need, or don't need. Start with Poland... Konrad can get a server setup over there that would cost me $2K/month... he could likely do it for $100/month

in your case you don't...

but if you have downloads or media streaming - you should have it...

Check the bandwidth graph. How often do you peak over 100 Mbps? Do you anticipate any growth, if so, how much?

I'd probably stick with the 100 mbps port then for now. Given the state of things it is smart to keep your costs as low as you reasonably can. Once you have data analyze the bandwidth graphs and see if you are topping out. If so, upgrade the port if it is significant. Just make sure to go with a host who has the option of a 1 Gbps port.

thanks man,

will surely go this way.

my current host provides upgrade for 75 bucks per month. so for start will stick to 100 mbps.

The way we do that and the way your host is likely to do that is
to provision the server on a 1gig port and configure the port as 100mbps
Full duplex. Should the customer upgrade, we simply type in a command
and the deed is done. If I were you, I would save the money until necessary.
After all, the upgrade should be just a command entry away.

You certainly can do something about it by switching providers, $75/Mo seems like a bit of a reach and taking advantage. If you want something a little bit more in-line with today's pricing I'd be more than happy to get you over a quote
