Chris Rock Stopped Performing for Students Because Everything Offends Them - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Chris Rock Stopped Performing for Students Because Everything Offends Them

There's plenty to dissect in Frank Rich's comprehensive interview with Chris Rock. The comedian covers everything from Bill Cosby (he hopes the allegations are false) to the federal bailout of the auto industry (he was against it).

I found Rock's remarks about why he no longer performs at college campuses most illuminating:

What do you make of the attempt to bar Bill Maher from speaking at Berkeley for his riff on Muslims?

Well, I love Bill, but I stopped playing colleges, and the reason is because they?re way too conservative.

In their political views?

Not in their political views ? not like they?re voting Republican ? but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody. Kids raised on a culture of ?We?re not going to keep score in the game because we don?t want anybody to lose.? Or just ignoring race to a fault. You can?t say ?the black kid over there.? No, it?s ?the guy with the red shoes.? You can?t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive.

When did you start to notice this?

About eight years ago. Probably a couple of tours ago. It was just like, This is not as much fun as it used to be. I remember talking to George Carlin before he died and him saying the exact same thing.

Provocative comedians avoiding the college scene? The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education's Susan Kruth explains why this is a lamentable development:

Just as college campuses are meant to be ?marketplaces of ideas? generally, they should be places where comedians and other performers are especially able to play with new acts. It?s disappointing to see that this is not so, and that the atmosphere for freedom of speech and comedy in particular on campuses has gotten bad enough that noted comedians are avoiding student audiences altogether. That is a real loss for them?after all, everybody could use a laugh.

Anyone who thinks that there are no consequences for trigger warnings, speech codes, free speech zones, crackdowns on taco night, or general feelings-protection at the modern American university should consider Rock's comments. University administrators are teaching students that it is proper for them to crave insulation from contrarianism and controversy. The result is a kind of de facto censorship, where someone like Rock?a worthwhile speaker, whether one agrees with him or not?has little incentive to share his perspective.

What better way is there to drain universities of their intellectual potency than to dissuade all interesting people from setting foot on a college campus?

EonBlue 04-01-2015 09:59 AM

What is the opposite of diversity? University.

Universities are becoming cesspools of group-think and uniformity of thought - all of it toward the left-wing/progressive end of the spectrum. They are churning out wave after wave of "progressive" drones who are incapable if independent critical thought.

.

blackmonsters 04-01-2015 10:02 AM

Black comedians are the new intellectuals.

They get much respect for their remarks on education because they dropped out of high school and blamed it on white bullies.

Chris Rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

Rock was bused to schools in predominately white neighborhoods of Brooklyn, where he endured bullying and beatings from white students.[14][15][16] As he got older, the bullying became worse and Rock?s parents pulled him out of James Madison High School.[16] He decided to drop out of high school altogether and later received a GED. Rock worked menial jobs at various fast-food restaurants
Harvard better listen up, Chris Rock is talking.

That's a massive crock of shit you just shat.

You obviously never hear of the Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Mormon ... Universities.

You think that's "the left"?

The right is actively running to the left because "the right" has been taken over by disturbed idiots.
There is no "right" anymore; just looney tunes who took over the banner.

So you might wrongfully think some of those institutions are "to the left".

I was considering making a post about how right wing talking heads have turned "college" into a dirty left-wing word, but then I just kept reading and didn't have to.

English is not the offical language of the U.S. it's spoken by the majority of the people here but it's not the offical language because we have none. FL the state you live in, was colonized by Spain (ie Spanish speakers). The only reason English is the main language spoken in the US, is because the original 13 colonies spoke English and as such the govt delt in English.

However once we started expanding past those 13 colonies, we started accepting states in which English was not always the primary language. Due to this there is no "offical" language and it's also reason why Spanish isnt completely legitiment as English in this country. Much the same as French in states like LA.

Only 2 topics for me are off limits when it comes to fucking around, that's rape, and child abuse (either physical or sexual), anything else is fair game mostly, depending on my 'audience'. There's a difference with taking the piss out of a person directly eg

"haha your dad died of cancer I hope it hurt" and "lol child abuse cracks me up"

which are obviously very shitty things to say and aren't amusing in the slightest, and eg the old derek & clive sketch which included the cancer song (and yes I know the back story on that) which is here and starts at around 2:40 (WARNING - if cancer is close to home for you and there is NO situation in which you can laugh at the subject matter, do not watch/listen). I'm not saying cancer is funny, I'm saying their routine about it is (to me anyway, though I get not everyone shares the same humour) - make sense?

I think most things are about intent/context, especially comedy, and it's too easy to decide to get offended over everything you can. Kinda like how a close friend can say almost anything, and if you know their intent isn't nasty, they get away with saying things that would have you breaking jaws if a stranger said the same. If you see/listen to a comedian, you need to realise it's like he is talking to a room full of his best friends

It depends where you are. In many places in the US knowing both Spanish & English is often a requirement to move into management. It depends on the local population.

You are just an old white guy whom thinks MERICA is getting taken over by the Hispanics all the while they have been here longer than the whites and Spanish has been spoken here longer as well. Right along side of English, since we started adding more states than the original 13 colonies.

Unfortunately the reason the laws become so restrictive is because assholes ruin things for everyone. You know like assholes in right wing govt making laws to allow discrimination of people, which in turn empowers hateful people like this pizza shop owner whom thinks it's ok to discriminate against people in the name of their religion..

So when you wonder why we have these laws and restrictions or why colleges over react.. Look no further than what is going on in IL right now with their new "Religious Freedom Law".. The haters make their own problems and as a result they have to be smacked down and then things are once again made more restrictive because some asshole thinks it's ok to discriminate and yet another layer of bureaucracy has to be added to make sure they can't.

It wouldn't be like this if not for assholes whom discriminate. :2 cents:
