Advice & suggestions needed to help my dog's hip dysplasia
 

trying to avoid surgery. currently we give him natural glucosamine/chondrotin, take him on 2 short walks/day, and no jumping.

anything else you might suggest that would help? sometimes when he's walking along he just has to lay down. he's a tough guy though and doesn't reveal how much pain he's in.

A very good friend of mine put down his dog about a week ago. I drove them to the vet in my truck. It got to the point he would drag his rear legs until they were raw and bloody and it just got to be time.

Pain pills were good at first but made it worse because he tried to run and do normal things which made it worse as time went on.. Shitty situation, I feel for ya,

How old is the dog? How much does he weigh? Swimming is excellent for dogs with hip dysplasia. My dogs weigh between 80 - 100lbs and I give them 500mg capsule omega 3 fish oil once a day (I poke a pin and put on their food). I do this more for their coat and good skin but I know it helps repair joints.

Along with glucosamine and chrondrotin I would add MSM.

I know previcox works well for dogs, but I have only given it to my arthritic old horse and it worked WONDERS for about 3 years before I had to put him down on the other side of 25. Before that he was on some sort of gel that had hylaronic (sp) acid - I want to say it was called Quest and maybe they make that for dogs too. It has all of the things I mentioned in it aside from the omega 3 I think.

My chow deals with similar hip issues, and we moved her from a base glucosamine to Cosequin (good deal on a big bottle at CostCo). That simple changeover, backed with a glucosamine heavy food as well has made a night and day difference. She went from not being able to stand, and having to crawl around the house to running around like a little pup again.

my buddy is ~8 years old and weighs about the same. i'll add fish oil to his diet. not sure what MSM is. I'll check out those other meds too, not familiar with them. there are some spots around here i can take him swimming, i'llpursue how to do that.


i check into that cosequin. i've got him loaded up pretty good on natural glucosamine.

i found that cosequin on amazon, reading about it, it's the MSM that's not in the glucosamine/chondortin i've been giving him so that should help, i hope.

it appears the previcox is a script, which pisses me off because the ortho specialist that my vet referred me to on this didn't suggest it. he just went straight to surgery as the option. surgery on both back legs.

My dog had hip dysplasia since he was a pup. Had him since he was 8 weeks old till he was 12. It's agonizing to watch sometimes and you know they're in pain.

Our vet prescribed something called metacam which we later found out would do his kidneys damage.

Had to put him down when it got to the point where he couldn't lift his rear end off the floor.

Hope your dog pulls through this mate ...

Your vet can just call it in for you. I do believe it can affect their kidneys though, and should be a last resort in my opinion.

I have nothing to offer in the way of advice - but hope you find something that helps alleviate your four-legged friend's hardship. Sad situation...hope it improves for ya' both.

Thanks for the kind words SK and y'all. My guy's got plenty of life left in him! I just need to get him on the right supplements and was thinking maybe a heating pad or warm soaks in the tub too.

Sooooo with that said...do NOT give that dog 500mg of omega 3! He will probably get the shits.

I am an ALL animal person. =) Once my dad is settled and moved in there will be 7 dogs here - one cat.

We give ours Dasuquin, covers the spectrum of a few things mentioned above.

We also walk them daily, limit their jumping up and down from anything higher than a couple steps. Have a ramp to go in and out of the back of the truck.

Another thing to look into is a Dog's bed. There are some really good beds for dogs that will help with these types of issues.

Right on, I ordered some and get it tomorrow. I hope he likes the taste. He's got a good fit on the sofa he sleeps on, I'll take a look at those beds and compare.

I got it. Weighs the same as 8 years, yep that thoroughly confused me. I thought you meant weighs the same as mine. Whew, anyway don't give him that dosage. Not sure, I see my vet next week I think, I can ask her to look for you.
