Would you have been a 'Hunter' or a 'Gatherer' ?

Say you awoke tomorrow, and it was 10,000 BC or whatever and you were amongst a tribe of primitive man.

You have the option to be a hunter or a gatherer. Despite feeling the need, to give the standard alpha male response of 'I'd be a hunter'... Which would you choose?

I think I'd be a gatherer. I'd prefer the mundane task that ensured survival over the 'gung ho' spear and bow and arrow lifestyle...

Who's with me as a gatherer, or would you all be hunters?

Disgust :)

Choopa Phil 04-08-2015 02:46 PM

I would be a hunter...all about that adrenaline rush.

420 04-08-2015 02:47 PM

Both, silly. The women would do most of the gathering but I'd harvest plants and such while out hunting for fish.

I'd be I'd be a hunter, not to be fancy, but just so I would be armed outside the cave... far better than being jumped by some freaking wolf pack while gathering blueberries....

I would be hunter-gatherer, as were our ancestors too. Although as women focused to the gathering part and men to hunting, I guess I would do more hunting than gathering.

But me alone; it would be fifty-fifty or something like that, but who the fuck lives alone (out of society)?

Much hunting was done with traps, by the way.

So, basically you would be thief who does murder robberies. Although I doubt that you can beat hunter groups.

Hunting was done more or less in groups. So, probably you would end up as meal.

doesn't make sense for the 'men' to go out to hunt, while the 'women' stay back to gather.

first of all, the 'city' would be defenseless.. secondly, the 'hunting party' would be rather small to make kills from massive herds where one death, not to mention 2+, would put the entire 'tribe' in extreme danger of starvation

they probably worked together as a team..

There weren't that much wars back then, not to mention "cities". But yes, there is at least one known case where women, children and old folks were massacred in one cave, as the men were probably hunting, etc. Wars usually occur when there is dispute about resources. Early human groups were tad small and thus not using that much resources, so there weren't that much incentive to fight unless there were dome drought or something that depleted resources.

About the hunting; some 10-30 men is more than sufficient to get kills even from a larger herd, even when using such tactics as driving animals off the cliff. No to mention just spearing some animals or using arrows.

And the women are not just left behind, as they are gathering. You don't gather that much the same vicinity over and over again, you have to move some distances. Also, hunting is more uncertain than gathering. There has to be gathering to ensure that they don't starve if the hunting goes fucked up. Thus there has to be divide, at least time wise, but based on current hunter-gatherers there is divide between men's and women's jobs. Gathered food makes most of the diet.

If I suddenly found myself back in time like that, I would begin making advanced hunting weapons. Work on storing food, and work on beginning farming on a large scale. I believe by feeding my tribe well in a few years I would be setup to not to much else except try to "invent" as much low tech stuff as i could recall.

Of course to do so, I would need a steady supply of the hottest girls to live in my hut. :)

Nooo! It doesn't work that way. No fucking inventing. Not even lady shavers, you have to tame the bush otherwise.

I agree, it would be way more exciting. especially when you get something

sperbonzo 04-09-2015 09:34 AM

So then, my question is.... To all those that chose hunting, are any of you hunters now?

I have hunted a few times, (elk, mostly), but I wouldn't call myself a "hunter". I do agree with the talk of the adrenaline rush etc... so I wonder, since you would want to do it back in time, do you do it now? And if not, why not?

I hunt, but you don't really notice the adrenaline rush while hunting, unless the situation collapses quickly and there is just the adrenaline left. Maybe excluding some first hunts, at least I was more "shaky" after getting the prey, but during the situation, I don't think that I noticed any adrenaline even then.

Agree I only ever got a rush the first time hunting and maybe a little rush when hunting for new large game.

As for the hunter/gather thing... back in say 10,000 BC they did not really farm or have domesticated live stock. Like Phoenix, if I found myself back in 10,000 BC... I would also try to introduce farming and keeping of live stock etc... Well working on that also work on making more advanced tools and methods of hunting... Language may also be an issue depending on the tribe we are talking about.

Where's the harem guard option?

My resume's all ready for that position.

OK, I was too hasty. Here you go, but unfortunately they didn't have this in pink at the stone market. I can also make some soap to give lubrication, but you better not to ask from what it is made from. :) (I mean real soap, not some kinky stuff)

What if nut eating squirrel is the fittest? Or dung beetle?

As in real; the survival of the fittest doesn't quite match the popular image about it.
