The guy has wanted to "punish" his air company by means of mass murder. He has planned everything and even used a diuretic to make his colleague wanna pee and left the cabin. He could archive the same effect by blowing a bomb on the board. By seems he just found a technically easier way.

Wonder why he didn't go for crashing into something other than a barren mountain? Could have crash landed in a town/city.

Because:

1) it's harder to do;
2) he has not much time to find a "suitable" city somewhere near when the 1st pilot has left cockpit.

I bet he would crashed into some town-scrapper if he had time. Don't forget that he was able to block the door for only 10-15 minutes or so. After that it was opened by the code from outside.
