Why the fuck do people signup for cell phone contracts?

Cricket Wireless is owned by AT&T and offers the same exact service, including 4G LTE.

For $60/mo. ($55 on auto pay), you get unlimited talk and text and 10 GB of 4G LTE data (if you go over, you can buy more at $10/gb, or they will just throttle you to 128 kbps). They also have cheaper plans with less data.

No contract.

Yes, you have to purchase your phone outright (e.g., 64 GB iPhone will set you back $749, but they also have great resell value), but you still pay the carrier for the phone when it is subsidized. You just end up paying more; cost of the phone, plus more expensive service.

You grandfathered in?

Obviously, that is the exception. I wish I had stuck with my old Verizon deal with unlimited data.

The deal you mention is $225 on AT&T's site.

You're in Canada. Trust me, I've had to hear from my Canadian friends for years about how inexpensive mobile service is there. They were shocked that some people pay $100+ per month, per line.

no, i snagged the 1/2 price data plan offer when it hit some time ago. that $225 seems low if it includes a premium smart phone.

You answered your own question.

Tell people they just paid $500 for the phone, they will look at you stupid and say "no, I pay $80 a month and got a free phone!"

Ah, subscription services...

dyna mo 04-13-2015 11:35 AM

contract seems to have been a good choice for my situation, i also sold my old phone, an LG optimus g pro for $175, paid $200 for it 2+ years ago, so the new Nexus 6 only cost me $25.

i'm figuring by the time my contract opens up in 17 months=ish, there will be some non-contract high-speed data plans that don't throttle down at 4 gigs, etc. i'll check out the phones at that time and see if anything makes more sense than this nexus and go from there. the only thing i can think of that i would want would be a significantly better camera, and maybe an FM radio.

When my contract is up I'm buying out right and going with T-Mobile. They have a few nice plans. Virgin has some nice plans as well. Lots of options if you are willing to pay for your phone.

Cell phone contracts are just retarded.

You can do the same thing with Verizon, Sprint, ATT and TMobile main networks too. All 4 companies will finance, lease or subsidize your phone. It's your choice (still).

I still have a flip phone through MetroPCS.

Am I missing out on something? :helpme

the tmobile unlimited data plan looks good @$80/month but it caps the hotspot data transfer at 5g!

NEVER finance your phone through those stupid contracts. Buy the phone you want, then go to the service provider of choice. You save a ton and you get all the flexibility you want.

Also, never get your contract at the store. Instead, call the service provider and ask for the customer care department. They are in a better position to provide better prices and options. The stores are locked into only a fixed set.

brassmonkey 04-13-2015 01:48 PM

the contracts sucker people in with that two phones bullshit :2 cents::2 cents: the credit is easier if you dont have money! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh what? its true

takethebluepill 04-13-2015 02:35 PM

No different then the adult business.

It may look like the phone companies are giving you all sorts of options, but at the end of the day, the cost to the consumer and the profit to the corporation is pretty much the same.

Check their site from time to time.. I had the 10/gig plan but they were running a special to double the gigs to 20 for the same price. I get 20gigs now for $55/month. I'd never go back to ATT or Verizon with their data limits. Technically Cricket is ATT, but just an offshoot to compete with Walmart's straight Talk.

seeandsee 04-13-2015 02:58 PM

I check phone price. If i pay more than few bucks per month on top of phone price, during contract, i skip deal
