Fucking Ben Affleck ashamed of his ancestors LOL!

Ben Affleck Requested His Slave Owner Ancestor Be Censored From PBS' 'Finding Your Roots'

:1orglaugh Now that's humor!

Hacked Sony emails reveal that actor-director Ben Affleck requested that his slave owner ancestor be removed from his family tree on the PBS program Finding Your Roots.

In a series of WikiLeaks emails, the genealogy program's host Henry Louis Gates Jr. emailed Sony chief Michael Lynton asking "advice" on the actor's request, according to the New York Daily News.

"For the first time, one of our guests has asked us to edit out something about one of his ancestors — the fact that he owned slaves," Gates emailed Lynton in the July 22, 2014 email chain.

this is fucking hypocrisy. if he was actually appalled by inequality rather than concerned about PR, he wouldn't try to conceal the benefit it's brought him at the expense of others.

I share his shoes. my mom's side of the family is Native and hasn't up until my mom's/aunts generation ever started to accumulate any real wealth. my dad's side is white and they've always been pretty well off-great except for the fact that my ancestors a few generations back got rich trafficking in human beings. In Canada the only peeps with that last name belong to my family, whereas in the US it's known as a somewhat common Black name. I'm sickened by the reason why

the point is though that even though I find their choices and actions abhorrent in reality I am a beneficiary of the wealth they generated. parents provide foundations for their children via access to higher education and inheritance and that endures and builds upon itself with each passing generation.

so yeah, looking at my life I have profited from the slave trade. growing up with access to the resources my dad brought to our family implicates me in that. I think it's important to own that though, negating unfair advantage serves only to replicate it.

Why he thinks that fact is supposed to reflect upon himself, I have no idea.

Agreed. One cannot be responsible for something their ancestors did, many generations ago

He should be emailing to have 90% of his movies stricken from IMDB, seems more embarrasing. :2 cents:

He doesn't agree with what they did -> feels bad about it -> ashamed. It really isn't that complicated.

You can't change even your own past actions, but you can still feel ashamed about those. Well, at least most people can.

Who cares.
A lot of our familes owned slaves & a lot still would if it were legal today.

HELL if I found out one of my own ever owned or did slave trades, I wouldn't want anything to do with them. Thank god my family line never ever did that.

CPA-Rush 04-19-2015 12:48 PM

my great grandfather had slaves - workers with no wages etc . its stupid and against human rights .

Well, at this moment people and former colonies start proceeding against Holland, England and other countries that where involved in slave trade. All for the money offcourse.

Maybe it is an idea not to go after a country, cause 99% had nothing to do with lave trade, but directly go to their families, like Ben Affleck

I don't think that going after descendants will work even in shitty US legal system. Country may have existed as a legal subject by that time, Ben Afflect surely doesn't.

Suing countries probably won't have that much success either.
