Did I miss something? Are we short on cows? Seems like over the last 6 months or so ground beef has gone up... and this is a guess... maybe 40%

40% is right about on the money. Some places I shop it's more than doubled even.

Price of feed going way up is part of it.

I was at Publix today (which is a grocery store chain here in FL) and their SALE price on 92% lean was $6.99/lb... I was like, meh not bad... then I thought about it and was like WHAT THE FUCK?

Ground fucking chuck is $5.70 and that's the shit you'll find bones and hairs in for fuck sakes.

I am more of a chicken guy myself, but I remember growing up on a budget with my folks and a meatloaf was the "go to" meal for my parents when money was tight.

Now that shit would be like a $20 meal!

I go to Publix all the time and steaks seem about the same. 18.99 and 12.99 when the good stuff is not on sale.
Now bacon I have seen for 11.99 LOL I don't know but I thought there was a problem with the fucking pigs LOL. I don't buy it that often but it is the same shit I use to get for 7.99 and I would brag to the lady whom I would have cook it for me that it was the good shit. Now I cook it myself because if she fucks up my 10 dollar a pound bacon i'm kicking her the fuck out HAHA.

A lot of corn production was diverted to ethanol from animal feed use and the price of transportation fuel rose -- now having receded -- prices did not go down -- profit margins widened.

The cost have not come down with the crude oil crash and I am guessing meat products profit margins have increased.

don't forget that you put bread crumbs and more in meat loaf, so it actually is a pretty economical way to stretch ground beef out.

for bacon, i shop at a few grocers and always keep my eye on bacon sales and snag it for $3.99/lb in socal, so not too bad.

Just a few months ago I was buying my beloved NY striploins on sale at $6 each. Now they're in the $10 a lb range. A $5 pack of extra lean ground beef back then is now about the same, about ten bucks. Those large 'bulk' packs that used to be in the $18-$20 range are now closer to $30.

I can still get 1kg of smoked thick-cut bacon (2.2 lbs) for around $10 bucks, but that's a sale price. The regular price has gone way up on that as well.

Good thing I have a good-size freezer and thought to buy a lot of stuff back when the price was sane. I have several pounds of fish, a turkey, couple of roasts, steaks, chickens, ribs, sausages, an entire pork tenderloin. I'm good for a while yet. When I see any of it on sale now that's when I buy.

I'm also looking at buying direct from a local meat producer. All quality-controlled non-injected at wholesale prices. Time to cut out the middleman.

Luckily I don't have a big family to feed. We now only buy meat when its on sale and then stock up. Luckily we prefer chicken and turkey for the most part so the beef and pork prices don't impact us as much.

I accepted reality a long time ago though and anything that resembles healthier meat that isn't full of antibiotics and fillers is going to be more expensive anyways.

I think I paid 4.65 per pound for my quarter cow. I believe 4.00/lb was for farmer, and .65lb went to butcher. Lean, treated well, and tastes good!

As Malaysia imports almost all of its beef, you have two choices: 1. Get the cheap stuff from India or Pakistan (about $1.69 per lb for ground chuck 80/20). I ordered 5 kilos of India's finest and nearly threw up. Wrong shade of green. Didn't even bother trying to cook it. So choice two is beef from Australia or New Zealand, both of which come frozen or chilled, with chilled being more expensive.

Instead of ground chuck, I grind my own using Australian Ribeye ($3.84lb.) and Australian Brisket ($2.29lb.) When I'm doing burgers, I'll throw some short ribs into the mix at about $3.00 per lb. These are WHOLESALE prices and I'm buying about 80 kilos of each per week, between meatballs, Bolognese & Philly cheese steak.

Australia & New Zealand produce some fine beef. I had an unaged Australian Wagyu Ribeye done on the grill, about two inches thick and then sliced, that was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. That piece went for $30 a pound.

Started in 2013 with the rise in fuel prices and unfavorable feed crop conditions. That year our horse hay price tripled. We didn't see the high prices then because the market was flooded with beef from farmers culling their herd numbers. It just wasn't worth it for them to keep the numbers with the added cost. They reported a record yield in beef that year. farmers have been reluctant to jump back in, so demand outstrips supply at the moment. You can tell it's bad because lately supermarkets have been blending the beef with pork to avoid sticker shock. Somewhere militant vegans are rejoicing

lean beef for mince/stews is about $4 a lb here, but I am surrounded by grass fed cows, so it's pretty cheap.
