Need advice for finding a photographer

Hey guys, I would really love some advice on how to go about finding a good, and legit photographer.

I know that I can post saying I need a photographer, and many guys will jump up and say they'll do it. But I want a experienced and professional photographer who can also guide me through the process as I am new to all of this. One that has their own studio as well, as I can't do any shoots in my home.

I'm willing to pay for the shoots myself, as I want all rights to the images. I just don't know how to go about finding someone, especially locally.

Any tips on how I can find someone who is legit, and be safe would be amazing, and I would be so greatful!

a few things....you can hire a guy, then have him sign the rights over to you.... best way is to hand the shooter a memory card, after the shoot, get the card back and get the release signed.... that way there can be no misunderstanding or confusion about who has the content and who it belongs too and are there copies... you'll find the forms online....

many a photographer will want to retain the rights and sell you permission to use the images.... tell them to go fuck themselves and keep digging until you get the right guy....

figure about $500-$700 per 8-10 hour day and buy the guy lunch plus gas money.... you'll want a positive relationship with the shooter especially if the guy is good...if the imagery sucks move on until you find the right guy... use model mayhem and OMP and local sites like a craigslist...ask friends etc....

next will be getting the images color corrected and web ready....

I've never met a photographer who would sell the copyrights to photos he takes. Licensing rights, yes. But not the exclusive copyrights - even if he has no plans to ever make use of the images in a public/commercial/monetary way.

Following Grapesoda's advice of telling a photographer to go fuck themselves isn't exactly the way to win friends and influence people in the industry - I wouldn't advise that. The vast majority of photographers won't sell the rights. I'd wager you'll be hard-pressed to find an experienced one who will.

But good luck.

I have 80 exclusive scenes, containing video and picture, sitting on my desk right now. I own all rights. None of it is licensed, nor would I ever consider such a thing.

I guess we just travel in different circles.

I wouldn't denigrate a photographer who does sell all rights to images. Different strokes for different folks...to each their own.

But I'd sooner sell my soul than copyrights to the photos I take.

you'll never shoot custom content or to sell many many publications, I shoot for $. :2 cents:

Where are you located Miki? Are you looking to get adult photos and maybe videos of yourself as a model for your own use? You saw my photography in the other thread, maybe I can help you out if you are local or can travel for shoots.

As far as the discussion about selling the license outright for images that's pretty standard for those of us that regularly shoot content for other companies. If it's a shoot I am doing for my own purposes or sites and I want to keep the content of course then it's up to me to keep the copyright myself.

^this

if I thought of myself as an artist, i might reconsider. but when it comes to exclusive custom production, no client let's his shooters keep the copyrights after they paid thousands for the shoot.

I never intended to be a photographer.... after I got disabled I emailed all the porno websites and asked about shooting for them....this was in 2000.... started shooting.... did what I was told etc... funny thing though, both my parents were photographers in WWII

And I respect that. :)

Hell, I'm able-bodied (well, when my back ain't giving me grief)...and photoshoots still wear me out. :1orglaugh

My background's somewhat different, tho. I took college photography courses back in the day ('89-'91) - but then never directly pursued it after college for the longest time. I slipped into video production instead - until digital cameras came along. Then we launched our own company in '99 and shot only for ourselves.

My father was a skilled amateur photographer back in the film days, too. Perhaps something in the DNA. :winkwink:

you know when someone clicks on MikiHeart.com it want to install wordpress...you may want to do that before someone really screws with you.

also where are you at?

We guarantee that with a Work for Hire Agreement or Negative Pickup Agreement.

Agree, if I am paying for their talent and time to do a commissioned shoot it is mine and just as the model has no rights to their images after the job is done neither does the shooter. :2 cents:

I know what work for hire is, but what is a negative pickup agreement?

Love your hair!

Look at the photographers portfolio. Do an image search on Google to make sure they are really theirs. Find out models they work with and talk to those models about the experience. Ask for referrals as well. Most guys with cameras are not photographers. You don't want to pay them for THEIR experience. I would do all of this before you actually go meet the photographer. And remember their are some great woman photographers as well. :)

AlexisDropbear 05-11-2015 05:46 AM

Thanks for all the replies guys.

If I were to pay a photographer to shoot me, I would want full rights. Otherwise, I won't pay XD It's the same for when I've commissioned art for commercial use on a website.

I also know there are different levels of the rights and all that kind of stuff, and you can pay them to keep quiet. Companies do it a lot when they commission things.

and to venus. I know, I accidently broke it and forgot to back up. So I've had to reinstall XD

All good advice here....Except this poor misguided post.
