Brazil's $3 billion World Cup stadiums are becoming white elephants a year later
 

Nearly a year after the 2014 World Cup, many of the 12 stadiums Brazil built and renovated for the event have fallen into disuse.

Brazil spent more than $3 billion on the stadiums, some of which were built in far-flung locations without popular local professional teams to sustain them after the tournament. A year later, some sit empty and others are running at a loss, and even the stadiums that host regular domestic games have been plagued by disputes between the clubs and the stadium operators.

The Arena Pernambuco in the northeastern city of Recife, where 236 people bought a ticket to watch a Brazilian Cup match just before the World Cup, is resorting to corporate events, conferences, fairs and wedding ceremonies. In September, a 15-year-old boy celebrated his birthday at the stadium ? he and his friends were allowed to play on the field and use the changing rooms and other facilities.

At the end we didn't want to the worldcup to be hosted here anymore.
That's why people went to the street to ask the gov. to stop fucking around and allocate the money to important stuff even if Soccer is very famous here. President Dilma is an idiot.

Stadiums instead of hospitals and schools facilities : Yeah, that's why the rest of the world can't stop seeing Brazil as a 3rd world country.

They've got the olympics next year to waste more $$ on.

Exactly, while I was posting this I kept thinking of Olympic expenditures as well. Is there an overall positive economic reason for wanting to host events like this.

The Olympics of course is a much bigger expenditure than the World Cup, but really the money spent to get these event in this day and age are likely impossible to recoup.

It's really kind of insane for anyone to want to host these events, but again it comes down to the countries doing it trying to put up a show. Russia for example was trying to show the world they were back. Sort of their coming out party.

Lots of wasted money for a ego trip..

The olympics are shit and meaningless these days. They should be eliminated.

Same thing more or less happened in Cuba with the Pan American games I think it was. But they turned the dorms into homes etc.
