A handwritten note on the back of the photo says ...

'Aunt Velma, she never married.' 1888

Probably married to her career, no time for romance.

They most likely were miserable back then. What a rough life it must have been back then.

MiamiBoyz has a way of sucking people into his fucked up vortex. The REALITY is they were just as hot, kinky, fucked up and sexual back then as now. You see we come from a long line of perversion, and it is our duty to carry it forward into the future.

If you smile, you are a whore, but if you have terrible grin, you are decent God fearing human.

People rarely smiled for photos in the old days. Part of the reason was because the photographer told them to be very still because longer exposure times were needed. Also don't forget that dental care wasn't what it is today so probably people didn't want to smile. And since photos were only taken by professionals, it was also probably expensive. No on wants to pay a lot of money to have a crappy photo.

Because the exposure had to last from at least 15 seconds up to one minute to stop the ghost appearance movement smudge, it was impossible to hold a smile, especially as a group, so it was glum or nothing, esp young children. Long ago I visited a studio that started back in 1867 and is still going from the same premises, with an old huge workshop, backdrops and cellars full of glass plate negatives, and are still able to use some of the old equipment. It even smelt like 1867. During the second world war many glass plates were used to build greenhouses.
