a battle flag was used to guide troops in battle due to of the 'fog of war'... basically, so much smoke, dust and murder filled the air the only way to find your unit was to follow the flag... and where that flag went, you went... when a flag went down, you tried to pick it up and keep going..

now why would guys wanna follow the flag you might wonder.... well because units were composed for the most part of the men from small towns... say in your unit were 3 of your brothers, your dad a few uncles and your father in law and most of the guys you grew up with and their dads... you might want to keep them from getting killed... think? in fact many a small town lost most of their male population...
