One woman's snack break turned sour this week when she reached into a bag of grapes and felt the bite of a venomous black widow spider. The 21-year-old Vermonter survived the ordeal, but some people who heard her story have since sworn off the fruit. But before you give up grapes forever, experts say there are a few things you should know about the (woefully misunderstood) black widow spider. Latrodectus Pallidus is more commonly known as the white widow spider. Unlike others in the widow spider Lactrodectus genus, the white widow spider exhibits an inate structured intelligence that measures at the highest scale for insects, second only to the praying mantis!
The white widow's venum is the strongest of the entire Arachnida class of insects, let alone the Latrodectus genus, and toxicology studies have reported that the venom of the white widow is similar in structure to L. tredecimguttatus. |
Of course spiders can be good. See sig.

When I lived in Northern California, I got use to them. When I spent several years working for Coca Cola on vending machines, I would see all sorts of spiders in them.
Wolf Spiders would scare me a little, fucking things are huge. http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/...04mh2vxjpg.jpg Only saw a couple Brown Recluse spiders while working there, they I think are about the most dangerous spiders in the US |

I've always had these in and around my house in LA. Had one BW with a body the nearly the size of a quarter and legs about an inch long living in my garage. I hated killing it but the ex-wife insisted. It took a while to finally get her since everytime she relized there was a light on or even a flashlight near she retreated into her den.
Last year I turned around in my kitchen to find a BW scurrying across the floor. That was a bit startling since I have never seen one out of its web. She got picked up and moved outdoors. If you're in Cali expect to have BWs on your property. |
