Man says he was harassed while carrying gun at airport

ATLANTA (WXIA) ? A metro Atlanta man says he was harassed for exercising his Second Amendment rights while at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport last week.

Jim Cooley says that while he and his wife took his daughter to the airport after a vacation, he openly carried his AR-15 rifle ? which is his right under Georgia state law.

http://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/58f9...29072-n-2-.jpg

And while city officials have in the past expressed dismay over the fact that citizens are permitted to carry weapons in the open and public areas of the airport, it is, indeed, perfectly legal for citizens to walk through the airport with their weapons displayed in view, provided they do not move into the TSA-controlled secure areas of the airport property.

Cooley says he was approached by several Atlanta Police officers asking about his firearm, which he said he was carrying for safety, while at the airport.

Good, your second amendment right does not include scaring and harassing others you worthless piece of republican shit.

Rochard 06-02-2015 03:31 PM

Yes, it's your right to carry a firearm.... But you cannot honestly expect to carry an assault rifle into a fucking airport and not expect to be stopped by the police.

Stupid is as stupid does.

TheSquealer 06-02-2015 03:31 PM

What a dickhead

MaDalton 06-02-2015 03:32 PM

Just because cops asked this guy why he as carrying a rifle in the airport, does not mean he was being harassed by anyone.

A law abiding (but yes very indiscreet) citizen behaving legally under Georgia law is a "Republican piece of shit" .

Yet he is the first to defend a felons behavior no matter how stupid that felons behavior happens to be.

Amazing how hateful and one sided the more "enlightened" party is .....

As far as the guy claiming to being harassed by police, duh, I would hope a few questions were asked.

When have you ever seen me defend the actions of murderous cops?
I think we all know who has that market cornered.

I've never defended a murdering cop. Learn to read, I do criticize stupid people that provoke a cop and expect a happy ending somehow. Major difference and you know it.

Is this an "open carry" thing? And does the open carry thing extend to airports? If so, then yeah, Obama should be coming for your guns.

I agree, I also don't blame the cops for showing an interest. I'd be disappointed if they didn't.

dynastoned 06-02-2015 04:46 PM

it's people like these fucking morons that scare the shit out of people who aren't comfortable around firearms. they make it hard for those of us who are responsible gun owners.

Headline from 2025:
Area man upset after instructed to leave armored tank in parking lot of airport prior to entering building.

bronco67 06-02-2015 05:19 PM

Imagine if the guy was black. He would have eaten a lead salad in about 0.2 seconds.

But seriously, does anyone think people like this are moving our country forward? This guy will be dead in a few years from old age, and we should pray there's not another dickhead waiting in line to become him. When will these rednecks be filtered out of our society finally?

Mickey_ 06-02-2015 05:35 PM

I love the US but the gun situation is absolutely bonkers when a dimwit can waltz into an international airport with a magazine-fed, air-cooled assault rifle across his shoulder.

Oh God, even though it can fire up to 950 rounds per minute, you're going to have people arguing whether it's an assault rifle. Maybe people just like to unload 950 rounds into the deer they're going to eat!

GOOD! Let him do it!

I hope these gun tards push harder and harder and get more drunk on the power to abuse the "Right to Bear Arms" (read: right to murder as many people as a banana clip can hold) until this country finally wakes up and wipes it's ass with the archaic joke that is the second amendment.

Right on the money!
I certainly do hope someone at the airport security would notice, show interest and "harass" in the form of keeping a close eye and security nearby! This may be your right, but it is rarely exercised and thereby suspicious in its own and yes, threatening to others around you, who then in turn will feel insecure.

I may support the 2nd amendment but while a person may walk around in public with an assault rifle the cops have the right to harass the fuck out of him IMO.

Calling the guy an idiot for doing something legal? I don't now, call me crazy but wouldn't it make more sense to call out the ones that made the law for their idiocy?

But yes, the guy is an idiot. (but so is the law)

I'm more of a conceal-carry proponent. As long as you're trained/licensed/accredited etc, and keep it out of sight so people aren't getting freaked out by the sight of it, I have no issue with it. But letting people traipse around in public with assault weapons, christ on the fucking cross.

mikesouth 06-03-2015 09:17 AM

Obviously the guy was making a point and while it isnt how I would do it (I have a concealed carry permit) I have no problem with it, in my eyes he is no more dangerous than any given cop with a gun. I do expect the cops to show a keen interest in him and I too would be disappointed if they didn't.

In the end his carrying a gun at Atlanta Airport is a LOT less scary to me than trying to make laws that he can't.

bronco67 06-03-2015 09:25 AM

Let's say you were in a bar on a crowded Saturday night. You're in a state where it's legal to carry firearms and bring them anywhere you please. So for the sake of argument we'll say out of 100 people in the bar, about 20 are carrying handguns.

Someone with an illegal gun decides to come in and start shooting randomly. Would you rather take your chance in that bar, where you have 15 people with varied levels of firearm training (and that's probably being generous) shooting --- or would you rather just be in the bar where the one crazy guy is shooting, and try to get out safely?

I definitely don't want to be in the middle of a bullet festival. We're not better off if everyone is carrying guns. So if something goes down at the airport as THIS moron perceives it, is he supposed to start shooting his giant drum mag of .223 around the airport? We all know it's his fantasy to be a hero, but its more likely he'll just kill innocent people.

Va2k 06-03-2015 09:30 AM

He knew this was going to happen, he was just wanting to bring attention to himself anyway he could! Yes it maybe legal, but why a riffle, why not a side arm? Legal or not it's common sense that is needed.

scarlettcontent 06-03-2015 12:57 PM

idiot .

I don't believe that weapon can shoot 950 rounds per minute, but it kills me that gun nuts say that is not an assault rifle. No matter how many rounds per minute it shoots, automatic fire or not, it's an assault rifle.

That's like saying a Ferrari isn't a Ferrari because it doesn't have z rated tires.

I would like to see what would happen if a muslim man (or even woman) with in their traditional clothes (Bin Laden style) would walk in the airpory with that same gun... I guess that airport security would call SWAT team in matter of seconds...
