As a non-Muslim, you can also get in trouble her for saying the word "Allah" out loud. Kuala Lumpur is nice, but Malaysia is a third-world country in every sense of the word. That said, you can make some serious money here - loads of opportunities. That's the only reason I'm here.

This country has an interesting make-up. The government is run by the Malays (the Muslims) who make up about 60% of the population. The Chinese Malaysians own all the private businesses. And the Indian Malaysians come in third place. But they ALL love Western stuff. We opened a New York style pizzeria in April 2014. Opened the 2nd one November 2014, opening a third in October and launching Frozen Custard, which doesn't exist here. Just sold our first franchise to a group opening two stores in East Malaysia. Pretty good so far and I've only been here 16 months. Going back to the States for the first time since I got here on Wednesday.

Big middle class in KL. Also a lot of oil money, though that's taken a hit in recent months. KL also attracts a lot of visitors - number 8 in the world for annual foreign visitors (only two behind New York).

I think any business that caters to middle/upper middle class will do well. We're opening an old school barber shop in January - nothing like that here. Just low end and high end nothing in between. That's the niche!

Traveled around Malaysia years ago and thought it was one of the safer Asian countries myself. Even more developed imo
