Exposed: Magicians, Psychics and Frauds

One of the more interesting programmes i have watched recently.

BBC Four - Storyville, 2014-2015, Exposed: Magicians, Psychics and Frauds

Quote:

Renowned magician James 'The Amazing' Randi has been wowing audiences with his jaw-dropping illusions, escapes and sleight of hand for over 50 years. When he began seeing his cherished art form co-opted by all manner of con artists, he made it his mission to expose the simple tricks charlatans have borrowed from magicians to swindle the masses.

This entertaining film chronicles Randi's best debunkings of faith healers, fortune tellers and psychics. It documents his rivalry with famed spoon-bender Uri Geller, whom Randi eventually foiled on a high-profile television appearance. Another target was evangelist Peter Popoff, whose tent-show miracles and audience mind-reading were exposed as chicanery when Randi revealed a recording of Popoff's wife feeding him information through a radio-transmitter earpiece.

In telling Randi's strange, funny and fascinating life story, the film shows how we are all vulnerable to deception - even, in a surprising twist, 'The Amazing' Randi himself.

The stuff with the loon Peter Popoff was just crazy. How he fooled so many idiots and how Randi exposed him. Very interesting viewing. :2 cents:

On a general basis no. But he's the GFY magician so to speak. So, that's why... :2 cents:

Psychic shows are kind of popular in the US, I forget the name of this one medium. I hate it when the GF watches them.

Apparently he made even more money after he was exposed.

Figure that one out...

Love these

Also, this guy James Randi loves to rip them apart...

SilentKnight 06-10-2015 03:47 PM

Randi follows in the footsteps of Harry Houdini.

Houdini was a renown debunker of psychics and mediums back in his day after they tried fooling him into believing his dead mother was trying to communicate with him.

Just watched it, cheers for the link mate. Pretty jaw-dropping stuff watching the segment where people were berating Randi, shows what a complex and powerful organ the human brain is. The over-riding result amongst that was where their brains were so intent on holding onto the placebo effect of true belief that rationale flew right out the window, and where self-preservation kicked in to such startling effect. Pretty powerful part of the documentary for me, and led to a thought process that the makers probably didn't intend at all.

oh one more thing for anyone who didn't catch this yet: homo alert <--- jokes!!

Superstitious dribble that only uneducated fools believe.

They simply fear death and want desperately for the supernatural to be real.

2MuchMark 06-10-2015 04:30 PM

James Randi is the man.

And John Edwards is a douche.

And? I'd bet 99% of them aren't anywhere near as an annoyingly hateful cunt as you, and regardless of if I share their views on that, I'd sooner spend time in their company than yours. I doubt I'm the only one :upsidedow

Apologies for coming over harsh on someone who is textbook i-have-serious-personal-issues, but fuck, you are annoying. Cheer the fuck up a bit and realise not everyone can be as enlightened, well-read, intelligent, and all-knowing as you - you never know, you might enjoy yourself a bit more when you realise people aren't doing the things they do to spite you personally :thumbsup

Love this stuff.
Not too long ago, I used to see Peter Popoff selling "Miracle Water" on BET late at night.

The water does work though.

Met both Uri Geller and James Randi several times while in elementary school. Never liked Randi. Just came off as having a chip on his shoulder about everything. He was an angry guy with a huge agenda. Geller on the other hand was much more charismatic and interesting.

I've seen both demonstrations up close. We were in a room with no more than 15 people with Geller & Randi.. Randi could do the spoon bending trick but it wasn't the same as what Geller did.

Geller worked with Standford, the DOD and the CIA. There were things that he did that not even Randi could recreate. I don't think there's has ever been a good explanation for his remote viewing capabilities.

I'd need to watch it again but the part he's on the chat show of some sort and the host basically tells him to piss off before taking a commercial break was shocking to be honest.

You would have thought he was a murderer...

yup that little segment mate... was very very interesting... rather than turn on the scammer, they turned on the person who had burst their balloon. A long while back my mate who is a serial cheat told me his wife would believe almost any old shit he told her, because it's what she wanted to believe, rather than face the cold truth he was cheating on her. That has proven so true over the years with such a wide range of things that I've never forgotten it. A trip down memory lane of everyone on here who has stood up for scammers, for donny, and so on, again proves that the mind will create shit rather than deal with something it doesn't like, as a means of self-preservation. Nothing new in that, but always interesting to see it happen.

It's basically the same reason Derren Brown is doing so well these days as well. People will believe any old shit.

Mediocre movie, But I believe Amazing Randi was the inspiration for Red Lights

2MuchMark 06-11-2015 09:11 AM

Psychic / mind reading / card tricks / telekinesis / etc are all good when they are for fun or entertainment, but it should be just that - for entertainment. There is no such thing at all as Psychic-anything (no talking to the dead, no distant "reading", no mind reading, no telekinesis, no spoon-bending. Nothing, nada, zilch, zero. Anyone who believes that stuff is just too easily fooled.
