question for you server gurus
 

I'm using mobile for my internet while I travel long term. I had issues connecting to my host and can't access my cp or admin areas of my WP installs. My site front ends tend to be very hit or miss.

I contact my host and they are claiming it's because the IP block I'm on is banned under spamhaus. I checked and it does seem to be listed on the spamhause site.. I've rebooted my cell a few times and every ip I get seems to be on the XBL list and won't connect.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before?

The obvious question is what is your mobile internet service? And what locations are you logging in? ie. New York City vs Dandong, China

ATT and I'm in golden co at the moment. I had to keep rebooting my phone till I finally got a useable IP. It seems pretty fucked that spamhaus is banning IPs owned by ISPs when it's obvious the IPs are going to be used by a lot of diffrent people on a mobile service.

I still think its weird. Why block using an IP because it's on spamhaus list? I get blocking email from the ip but just web access? That seems silly.

Why the hell is your hosting company blocking IPs? Shouldn't that be at the discretion of the owner of the server? Is this a shared server or something?

Maybe you have a wordpress plugin installed that uses spamhaus which blocks access to your server from that ip? Can't imagine that your host is blocking these ips for you for web access, if that's true, you'd better look for a better host. Access to panels is sometimes also blocked, due to login attempts. Is your access also blocked on your normal site or just the panels. Sometimes these panels run on ports other than 80, these other ports are sometimes also blocked by wifi routers or whatever.

You'd better buy a cheap vpn and access your sites via that vpn. that should do the trick in an easy manner.

Your ip is showing up on the XBL which is claiming that it's has a history of exploits and other shit you can read on their website. It sounds to me like your web hosting company subscribes to the spamhaus feed, so they are blocking you because of that listing. The same as they would block mail from an SBL'd range or alike. Not really anything new there as many ISP's do this based on the spamhaus feed (CSS, SBL, XBL).

You can either try and figure out why your ip is on the XBL and get removed. Get a new static ips that's not on the XBL or as someone else said, use a VPN or proxy to get around it. Those are your options.

It sounds like your host is just straight up doing it wrong. There are tons of ips incorrectly listed in the xbl. To block them because of some perceived potential threat is asinine. Regardless, if your ip is in the xbl, your isp needs to know. They will want to get it corrected right away.

It would be like fighting a loosing battle as mobile systems don't get static IPs they are dynamic. Every time you reboot your mobile device you get a new IP. I checked 8 IPs before getting one which wasn't on the spamhaus XBL list.

It seems absolutely obscene that a host would use a list which has so many badly flagged IPs.. It also doesn't say much for spamhaus if they are just blindly adding dynamic IPs from ISPs to their lists.

This is what I was thinking as well.. Im not a much of a server guru so I wanted to make sure this wasn't standard practice.

Its just a shared server for a few mainstream sites I have.
