There is quite a bit of information about this on the Wikipedia page for Easter Island. Pretty interesting, but not exactly mind blowing. What they did was quite cool but totally possible with enough hard work.

What I found more fascinating was the Polynesians pretty much destroyed the island. It sounds like it was a beautiful place before they settled. Now it's sheepland, LOL.

I have read that the soil erosion on easter island is one of the worst of anyplace on earth. Supposedly, the people cut down all of the trees on the island to move these giant statues. In the process they ruined the ecosystem and wound up eating eachother as the food resources were exhausted. If they excavated the entire island they would probably find many smaller statues entirely covered by the eroded soil.

You misunderstood what I meant. I was saying that for a long time we had an idea that civilization started at a certain point in history (meaning using tools, building cities, language, etc.)
Before that people were very primitive as they evolved.

But over the last few decades that viewpoint has started to change as archaeologists now believe that civilizations may have been around a lot earlier (maybe even 20,000 years earlier than originally thought).

So what I was saying is that people were more "advanced" comparatively to what we used to think they were at earlier dates.
I wasn't saying that they were more advanced than we are now of course. :)

EDIT: And no, I didn't mean that the Easter Island statues are that old. They are only a few hundred years old, I was just commenting in general on archeological finds and analysis.

There are some people who believe that ancient civilizations were more advanced then we are right now... :) That's how they explain piramids and many other weird stuff around the world... :) Probably will do the same here... :) :thumbsup
