Link in new window?

Does it piss off surfers? For me, no problem loading a browser window on a good machine isn't a problem. But I know some people lag when they open a new window. Thoughts? Does it cause pissed off people?

I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue. I don't know if anyone that says it annoys then although it is a little when the page gets blocked and you can't find it.

I'd rather, in many cases, a new window open...so the main site I am at is still there.
{Maybe NOT for each - individual - photo to be shown full size...}
But a link to something, yes.

Opening in new window is ok / good. I always tend to use it on my sites.

Thanks for the solid replies. Might just try it out myself. :) Good for website retention?

I regularly "right click, open in new window."

So we all agree, it's a common thing and won't piss people off?

External links open in new window, internal links do not.

If I were browsing a site and every internal link on that site opened a new window, I would have to be pretty dead-set on viewing that content in order to stay on that site after more than one or two page-views.

It's incredible how many times I have encountered that. Very annoying.

Middle mouse click does that for me, and closes tabs too. :upsidedow
(..I prefer tabs, new windows suck unless it's needed like a login box or popup for social media sharing and things like that which close and go back to the original site when done)

What he said :thumbsup

New window is OK for link to another site. Some idiots open a new window for pages within thair own site, Sometime you doN,t see it (depending on browser setup), then you end up with 20 pages open.. Grr... :Oh crap

I like links to open in new tabs. Thats the thing that I hate about xbiz forums. You see a link in a post to an article or something, open it, read the stuff, close the tab and youve closed down xbiz too... Pain in the ass. I like stuff to open in a new tab like it does ere on gfy

Isn't this basically the "web standard"? Any UX course/program/tutorial I've seen has specified this.

I prefer new window.

It bugs me when I get moved from a site I wish to stay on.
