Most likely alive. If not breathing she will nudge it a few times and if that doesn't work will give it a swift kick across the floor and that usually does the trick.

Dry baked savanna ground which has been compressed by being trod on herds of elephants would be pretty close to being as hard as concrete... Evolution would have had to deal with that.
