I just spilt wine on my laptop. It cost a small fortune and I didn't back up some really important shit.
I thought I got away with it. I cleaned it real quick.

But i heard it crackle and then saw smoke. I turned it off quickly and have left it to dry out but I feel sick.

So sad... now the poor thing has two habits to kick.

What brand is your laptop? It happened to me like 2 times about 6 years ago with mine (thinkpad) but nothing bad happened as it was designed to survive it.

It's a HP envy. I left it to dry overnight, hope it will be OK when I switch it on.

My better half has spilled cola and coffee over her laptop and we've just switched it off, dabbed it with paper towels and blasted with a hair dryer for 5 mins.

Leave overnight and the worst that will happen is a couple of keys will be sticky...

I've tried talking to her about having drinks near the laptop but that's another story.... :)

Thing is I spilt the wine and then quickly dried it off. Thought I had got away with it until about an hour later when I heard crackling and then saw smoke.
I turned it off as quick as I could and haven't tried it yet .
Might leave it until tomorrow just in case..

You had best leave it for more than 24 hours.

In fact, if you are moderately well versed in computers, I would recommend taking the back off, the battery out, and leaving it open for a least 48 yours.

Any liquid remaining can fry (short out) electronic circuits faster than you say "fuck my tight asshole grandpa" and although I suspect that has already happened since you did mention smoke immediately after the spill I am still trying to be optimistic for you!

Yeah, Asians will be attracted by the rice and will fix your electronics.

Take out the battery, open laptop, take out ur keyboard, dry your mobo with hair dryer!

And see how it goes after that!

I'm sure the drive is still good. Worse case scenario is that the laptop is shot and your data is still intact.
