"An FDNY recruit is getting a third chance to pass the training academy after collecting top firefighter pay for a year in desk jobs, sources told The Post.
Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder, 39 — one of four women among 320 current probies in training — failed midway through a Fire Academy class in 2013, and returned to her former job as an EMT.

A year ago, a classmate called Doirin-Holder “the most pathetic specimen of physical fitness I’ve ever seen,” saying she failed to run a required 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, stopping to walk, and got winded walking up stairs.

Doirin-Holder gets top firefighter pay, a base $76,488 after five years, because she is one of 282 “priority hires” who Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered must get preference.
Two other female priority hires in Doirin-Holder’s first academy class, now ages 41 and 44, did well, sources said. They passed the Functional Skills Test, or FST, a tough obstacle course of tasks such as climbing six flights of stairs in full gear and dragging dummies.


​Doirin-Holder now stands to benefit from the FDNY’s newly watered-down standards, critics said.
In a July 7 letter to firefighter union president Steve Cassidy, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro denied that standards have been lowered. But he confirmed that probies no longer have to pass the grueling FST if they do well on academics and practical skills, or individual tasks.
Last May, the FDNY graduated probie Rebecca Wax, 33, the first to fail the FST.
In another change, probies who fail the 1.5 mile run can demonstrate adequate aerobic capacity on a Stairmaster machine, Nigro said.

this entire ordeal stems from a discrimatory written exam, why would she have priority for the physical part of the exams?

His ruling requires hiring off a list of priority hire candidates, two of every five newly hired firefighters to be black and one of every five Hispanic, until the department has fulfilled the court-ordered quota of 186 black and 107 Hispanic hires or until the list is exhausted. This is due to a lawsuit that alleges two placement exams (Written Exams 7029 or 2043) for the FDNY were discriminatory against blacks and Hispanics, because fewer minorities passed the exam than whites.

What do you expect when you give a generation participation trophies and tell them failing is good enough, that everyone is a champion and a star and that everyone is special and stop keeping score in sports? You end up with a generation of self entitled assholes who are going through life bewildered and embittered by the fact that the trophies and praise stopped.

This is exactly who you want to respond to the emergency call to save your family... a weak, self entitled, self centered asshole who can't be bothered to try at life.

And this is the shape they're in preparing for and taking the test. Imagine what pitiful shape they are in 5 years down the road when responding to a call.

They call it equal opportunity hiring up here. It is complete BS. When I was in high school I wanted to be a fire fighter. I was basically told by my guidence councillor not to bother because I was not what they were looking for. Basically because I was a white, straight male. I could have aced all the tests but they were required to hire a certain percentage of black,Asian, female, etc etc.

Seattle is like this with police. You get pulled over by a state cop and its a 27 year old athlete. You get stopped by a city of Seattle cop and its a morbidly obese moron thats out of breath just walking up to the car window. It's sad. This society seems at times to just be a huge race to the bottom in every single aspect of it where the lowest common denominator is setting and continually lowering the standards.

If I recall correctly, fighter pilots need to have perfect vision. I'm fine with that and totally makes sense.

From what I recall, state police still have pretty high standards. The FBI just recently decided that they were going to enact high-level physical standards once again as well after letting agents go lax.

Sorry, but fireman should be 185 cms...100 kgs...and fit as fuck.
They get the pay for danger and to keep themselves in tip top shape.
Anyone who can't pass the physical should be phased out.
