many people def care, but the most important people, who make decisions our troops have to pay for, do not. thats for sure.

what i wonder is, will the military ever catch up to the times & stop fighting the cold war, stop trying to pick a fight with china, russia? why do we send planes over their countries just to act like tom cruise?

We supposedly have a defense budget equal to the next 10 countries combined, so there is plenty to cut.

I think 80% is way way too much.

Cut it even by $1 and some politicians scream how that would make America weaker and we'd be taken over by ISIS.

Just reduce the spying budget of the NSA and we'd be golden.

maybe. we can bring home the tens of thousands of troops sitting in germany, korea, okinowa, & i bet those countries would be safe without us.

we are building an F35 boondoggle to replace F16s that are superior dog fighters. great idea. not to mention all the savings replacing soldiers with robots. standing armies are a fossil, its all about spec ops/intel now, & someday a ballsy president is gonna have to clean house.

i dont think it will happen unless a ginormous economic depression forces the government to get real. or maybe president trump...

Take a good look at military history for the United States in the past one hundred years.

For the most part the United States minded it it's own business, and the and the WWI hit catching us unprepared. We quickly ramped up, geared up, were woefully unprepared when we got there, and never had much influence on anything there. Our military came home and that was that. WWII was pretty much the same - We were unprepared, late for battle, and again completely unprepared. And again our military came home and that was that. Then there was Korea, and it was the same shit all over again. After Korea we decided not to downsize our military. If our military was needed, from then on forward it would be able to respond in any theater almost instantly.

And for a long time, US military policy was based on oil. If China or Russia cut off the oil supply from the Middle East, everything in the United States would come grinding to a halt - including our military. However, these days the United States is much less dependant on oil from the Middle East.

The problem is the United States has interests in all regions, and a desire to project it's power in all areas of the world. If you are okay with Israel being attacked and the United States not being able to help for two months and not being able to project a large amount of influence in the region for two years, then yes, we can downsize our military.

However, the US military has benefited the world. The first computers were for the military, the Internet itself was by the US military, GPS was originally military (Called TRANSIT, used by the US Navy in 1960)....

this is the sales pitch defense contractors throw at the pols & they fund carte blanche. that worldview is stale & obsolete. we dont need to "project" with our carriers floating around. we project with our economy, by using economic sanctions to persuade iran to negotiate a way out of sanctions. our carrier didnt get them there.

the world is not fragile. germany does not need our troops, & Israel has bought so much arms from us they dont need us & you know it. they didnt need us 40 years ago when they were getting attacked. dont need us today.
