Cameras - What are you shooting on?

Curious to know what everyone is shooting with these days.

Video or stills, it doesn't matter. I'm curious to know either way.

You shoot mostly still photography right?

I have a friend who shoots short films on a d800. He's the only person I know who shoots video on a Nikon.

CurrentlySober 08-10-2015 07:45 AM

Nothing these days... When I retired, I gave away all my kit to a pal who wanted to set up a wedding photography business...

Biz failed and when I asked for them back, he informed me he had sold them, cause 'I gave em to him anyway, so they were his to sell'...

Sigh....

I've got an Ursa Mini 4.6k on preorder. But not a day goes by that I don't think about reconsidering and going with the larger Ursa.

candyflip 08-21-2015 02:38 PM

I pulled out of the Mini preorder and bought the Ursa. Arrived yesterday with a nice set of Cine Prime lenses.

I love my Nikon d610.

Robbie 08-21-2015 02:44 PM

Love the Ursa!

Was gonna go with it, but I went with the Samsung NX1 instead (replaced my Canon EOS 5d Mkiii)

I'm totally happy.

Replacing the mkIII already huh?

I'm too impatient to wait for the Mini and got $1000 off on the Ursa, so that cuts the 4.6k sensor upgrade in half when it's released.

I don't shoot much of anything handheld so the weight didn't effect me all that much, except for that fact that I had to spend money on a much higher end tripod and head.

It's HUGE though.

I find that anytime I opt for #2 I only end up pissed at myself. Go for #1, always.

This was the original choice. I got sidetracked my smaller size, when we all know that bigger is better.

No way to be pissed here. I just moved the preorder funds to a 4.6k upgrade :winkwink:

I loved the mk iii. But I made the switch back in Feb.

These new model cameras like the nx1 and the URSA are completely different animals.

The Canon MKiii performed in almost every way like a "real" film camera.

But the nx1 is like a small computer. It is just incredible to work with.

And from all the research I read on the URSA it's like that as well.

At first I tried to use my NX1 the same way as I did my Canon. In other words I tried to set up a very flat profile and then take it into post for intense color grading.
But what I found out very quickly was...that is no longer needed. Matter of fact, shooting flat with my NX1 is the exact wrong thing to do.

I tried shooting flat the first couple of scenes I shot with it because I was thinking traditional shooting methods.
But the camera itself produces such incredibly beautiful colors and contrast that I abandoned that.

Now I shoot it with no profile at all. Just letting the camera do it's thing. And then in post, I use Magic Bullet Colorista, Cosmo, and Mojo to give it that extra icing on the cake and a "cinema" look.

Loving it!

Post up a small vid shot with the URSA when you get comfortable with it. I'd love to see. :)

SilentKnight 08-22-2015 01:58 PM

I've been lookin' at the nx1 - but haven't seen an 18-200 lens available for it anywhere.

candyflip 08-23-2015 06:59 AM

Gonna take it out of the box and really play with it for the first time today.

Does the NX1 shoot 4k? If so what sort of monitor are you using? I'm gonna have to grab something shortly, my current is only 2.5k and that's not gonna cut it any more.

For my personal work that I often shoot on the side while I'm shooting porn, I use a Holga plastic camera I bought new in 1999 for $12. It uses 120 film, and I shoot mostly b&w, though occasionally shoot slide film and cross-process it.

The camera has a shitty plastic lens, which means lots of vignetting, and it has a couple light leaks, which you can really see in the first image... it's a total coincidence that the beam of light in that photo is pointing at the model's face.

I live about 2 miles from the Kodak HQs. It's not the name is used to be, but it's still awesome to see it pop up from time to time.

Great shots!

And here's proof it's not necessarily the camera quality - but the person behind the lens.

Some really good shots there...especially for a 16yr old $12 film cam.

Yes it does shoot 4k both UHD and full 4k.

It's monitoring capability sucks. For some reason it's HDMI outputs a super contrasted view. No idea why it does that, except that the HDMI is really supposed to be used for recording raw uncompressed 4K onto an external hard drive.

So for the NX1 it doesn't matter if it's a shitty Marshall monitor or a Small HD monitor.

Fortunately, the onboard lcd is pretty nice and kind of comes out from the camera and you can angle it a bit.

Sometimes I hook up a monitor on it even though it looks like shit on the monitor. But a lot of times I can just run and gun with no monitor just using the LCD.

Like I said, it's a completely different beast than my Canon 5D MKiii was.

I had about 20 pound of extra gear strapped on me when using the Canon.

This little NX1 doesn't seem to need anything at all. And it's light enough that I can easily just not even use my Ready Rig system or tripod and just hand shoot with it.

I love it.

To make an analogy...the NX1 is kind of like that skinny little spinner at the bar that you really love fucking. But the URSA is that incredible blonde with the giant bubble ass and huge tits that you really, really want to fuck too. :)

I worked on a short recently and assisted the DP who has one on loan from Blackmagic. If you can get over the weight in comparison to most of the common cameras under $6000, it's the best bang for your buck.

I love the 10in monitor in addition to the two 5 monitors. That just means for less add ons and cables and what not.

I did just find a little unit that plugs into the cFast card slots and lots you record to SSD which would make for a huge savings. Will have to grab one of those. Aside from that and having to upgrade my tripod system for about 1/2 of what the camera cost (for a low cost pro level tripod and head)...It's perfect for what I want and that's to shoot short narrative films with a small crew in a controlled environment.

I've already got a few people lined up to rent it too, so it will all pay for itself eventually.

I currently use a Nikon D800 with a 70-200 lens for my photos, shooting video with it is pretty sweet as well. My main video camera is the Sony AX100 its a very nice affordable 4 k camera.

I am thinking about changing it up to the new sony Mirrorless camera with a silent shutter. the sony alpha a7rii.

I'm a big Sony fan. I have an FS100 and my partner has FS700.

Impressive images from the AX100.

No doubt, on paper it looks really good and there's quite a few people saying really good things about them.

The recent and sudden drop in the AUD is a bit annoying though.

Did you get the Shim kit with it ?

I've a grey import Canon 1000d (labelled as a rebel). its only an amateur camera but I've still no idea how to use it!

The one thing that I am really happy about having purchased this one over the Mini is the ability to upgrade the sensor. Since the URSA is their Flagship (for the time being), I would reckon it will be able to be upgraded for the next 5 years or so...the Mini isn't at all.

New tripod and head arrive today. Then I can really give it a workout.

I agree , the mini just looks like a compromise on almost everything.

I've got a set of Lensbaby Composer PL lenses, but I'm not sure if the shim kit is an accessory or included.

Less weight is nice, but when you're on a tripod most of the time...it's not worth the trade off to me.

Shim kit is a US$55 accessory.

But it's really half the camera at more than half the price IMHO.

That's cheap enough, but you'd think given the price of the camera it'd be included :)

The 4.6k Mini EF model for $4995 is still a pretty sweet deal. The full size EF Ursa is still $2000 more here in the States.

I'm about to list my Sony FS100 for sale, get some money out of it while I still can and grab a Mini 4k model for a B-Cam.

Proceeding to either sell the content or update a brand new site :thumbsup

It's the new FZ1000, it's only just been released & the new 1inch processor is super fast for focusing.

We've been using SLR for years, but for me to shoot selfshot clips & to have a camera so versatile & no worry with different lens, this is so perfect for us to take out with us on our daily walks & adventures. Also we can either shoot great quality full HD or 4k
