Kind of makes sense actually, "Google" is just one of the products that Google Inc owns, they are huge and have many entities like YouTube and probably want to be known for more than just their search engine. :2 cents:

g for google
y for YT
etc etc.

Holding companies are hardly anything new. I imagine a lot of us on this board were way ahead of Google with having a holding company. It's just easier. Especially when you have LLCs for each asset, like a property or IP holding.
