Difference between: Socialism and Communism

Okay let's make the question a little bit harder this time.

In your own words, explain the difference between socialism and communism.

Porko 08-18-2015 07:33 AM

"from each according to his ability, to each according to his deeds" --socialism

"from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" -- communism

Socialism = economic theory
Communism = type of government

There really isn't a single definition of socialism. An anarchist's view of socialism would be very different from say a utopian socialist's view of socialism. You should read of Draper's "Two Souls of Socialism". Socialism, essentially, comes in two forms: Socialism from above (top-down approach), and socialism from below (bottom up approach). Socialism from above tends to be the favored approach from the original socialists (utopian socialists) and the marxists. Socialism from below is favored by anarchists and syndicalists.

Communism is a state of well...statelessness. There is no state, no class, and no social hierarchy. Communism is the pure form of "horizontal collectivism".

Socialism= ideology how ownership of wealth should be distributed among people/ entities.
Communism= practical solution to employ socialism (one way).

Even a kid here knows the difference. The Socialism is something that many EU countries have. Especially Sweden. The same applies to Asia as well (e.g. UAE).

The Communism is an utopia. It's something you can seek for but you will never reach. It's like the "∞" symbol in math.

Here you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Kapital and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Communist_Manifesto

Communism is a branch of socialism (you can call it "revolutionary socialism") ...

End result of socialism:

Depends how you define them, socialism is a theory, you can read exactly what it is in Marx's own words. Communism is a political system based on socialist theory.

In the real world there are NO perfect examples of either.

To me they are on the same spectrum, in a socialist country you still have some autonomy as a human being, a feeling that you're still free but you have obligations to your fellow countrymen/state, in a communist country you are first and foremost a servant/contributor to the state. Horrible.

Here's a better picture of the end result of socialism as seen in sweden:

It's an oversimplification to call Sweden "socialist". While it's true that Sweden has been ruled by the Social Democratic Party ("socialdemokraterna") for most of the 20th century, and without interruption from 1932 to 1976, there are several reasons which suggest Sweden is not socialist:
Sweden has had a strong free trade-orientation since the 19th century. The Swedish economy is small, specialized, open and dependent on exports, which has helped generated money for a generous welfare state.

Connected to this: Sweden has become very business-friendly. Entrepreneurship is openly encouraged in every possible way, which is why such a small country has spawned Skype, Spotify, Minecraft...

Sweden's defense relies on NATO. Sweden isn't a member of NATO formally but that doesn't change the fact that Sweden depends upon the United States for its security. In an EU context, Sweden is very vocal in its criticisms against human rights violations in states such as Russia and China, compared to countries such as Italy or eastern European states.

Socialism: A republic or a democracy can adopt some socialist principles and Socialism can co-exist within Capitalism.

Communism: A "workers' :upsidedow owned nation" -- a dictatorship with equal wages for all except the Politburo and the Commissars -- they get to sponge off of and steal the wealth created by the workers. Communism creates a situation of massive wealth redistribution ( to the Communist State ) then stagnation will set in until some capitalist incentives are reintroduced. There is no real incentive to produce -- the harder you work no longer matters: You will get the same wages as a menial laborer unless you have some Communist Party status.
