The new sound of electric cars?

From https://www.carthrottle.com/post/thi...tric-vehicles/

Quote:

This Could Be The Weird New Sound Of Electric Vehicles
A weird new sound has been created to warn pedestrians, cyclists and other road users of an EV's presence. This could get annoying...

This is the new warning sound that’s been created by PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault and Nissan for use on electric vehicles. Because EVs are near silent, the idea behind the system - which is pumped out of external speakers when cameras recognise a pedestrian, cyclist or another road user - is to reduce the risk of an EV running into a person who might not have heard it coming, (the NHTSA states that EVs are twice as likely to hit someone at low speeds compared to an ICE car).

The system is called eVADER and has been designed to "find an optimum balance between ensuring the cars are detectable, whilst retaining the reduction in noise pollution, which is one of the great benefits that our EVs offer.”
I really think that no sound is the best sound, though I do think that this new sounds is pretty cool sounding..

Put straight cut gears in the drivetrain, problem solved.

Sly 08-24-2015 12:49 PM

How on earth could you possibly think that sounds cool?

I now want to stab someone.

Probably a EV driver.

AdultKing 08-24-2015 12:49 PM

Well that just ruins the element of surprise when some idiot walks onto the road without looking :upsidedow

dyna mo 08-24-2015 12:56 PM

wait, so the onus is now on pedestrians to scramble out of the way of cars?

aren't cars supposed to yield to pedestrians?

i would think alerting (waking up) the driver with an annoying sound would be a better solution to, you know, a driver about to run over a pedestrian and expecting them to jump out of the way. have y'all walked through a grocery store parking lot lately? it's like death race 2000

how fucking backwards is this place?

women are worth 10 points

teenagers are worth 40 points

The sound of the future. :thumbsup

Typically the general idea is that a car can hurt you so it's good practice to not walk onto a road without looking for something that might hurt you first. :2 cents:

Here cars need to give way to pedestrians when turning left or right at a set of traffic lights, zebra crossings, school crossings, etc. But you spend a day in Melbourne and you'll see complete idiots crossing 20 metres away from an intersection, diagonally, while reading their mobile phone and not looking.

oh i agree. we are all ultimately responsible for our own lives. i can tell you i keep my head on a swivel when i cross the street and certainly when walking through parking lots.

but i do that because of shitty drivers who have little concern for pedestrians. the problem is not poor walking, the problem is poor driving.

in reading the actual study results mentioned in the article, i can highlight that the problem is inattentive (poor) drivers:

Quote:

This study found that pedestrian and bicyclist crashes involving both HEVs and ICE vehicles commonly occurred on roadways, in zones with low speed limits, during daytime and in clear weather, with higher incidence rates for HEVs when compared to ICE vehicles.

A variety of crash factors were examined to determine the relative incidence rates of HEVs versus ICE vehicles in a range of crash scenarios. For one group of scenarios, those in which a vehicle is slowing or stopping, backing up, or entering or leaving a parking space, a statistically significant effect was found due to engine type. The HEV was two times more likely to be involved in a pedestrian crash in these situations than was an ICE vehicle.

Vehicle maneuvers such as slowing or stopping, backing up, or entering or leaving a parking space, were grouped in one category based on that these maneuvers are potentially have occurred at very low speeds where the difference between the sound levels produced by the hybrid versus ICE vehicle is the greatest. In future analysis with a larger sample size, it would be ideal to investigate each of these maneuvers individually.
Incidence rate of pedestrian crashes in scenarios when vehicles make a turn was significantly higher for HEVs when compared to ICE vehicles.

EV drivers do not check to make sure things are safe and clear when backing up or parking. the test could in fact be showing that EV drivers are worse drivers than ICE.

i strongly believe the problem is with the driver, not the pedestrian, even though pedestrians are certainly responsible for themselves.

Why not the sound of normal car? With a beep or something for those "cool" guys who want to announce it is actually an electric car :1orglaugh

I would think that the sound of a real car would be best. A nicely tuned deep sounding exhaust note would be perfect.

I don't know. It reminds me of some sci-fi space sounds from 60's sci-fi movies... maybe its a sound that as a kid, I always associated with "The Future"... ? Not sure. Just kinda like it.

No Stabbing! Stabbing bad.

exactly. and all cars already have this, it's called a horn. which goes to my point, honking your horn at a pedestrian right before you are about to run over her entirely misses the problem.

this is just a silly idea smarmy horn for elitist EV drivers who couldn't be bothered to pay attention.

outta my way lady, i'm drivin!

Sounds like an intro to a dubstep track.

SilentKnight 08-24-2015 02:29 PM

My EV will need a few sub-woofers to make the growl of an AC 427 Shelby Cobra.

MrBottomTooth 08-24-2015 02:30 PM

Sounds like something the bureau of ATF would use on a prolonged compound raid to drive their targets insane.

Rochard 08-24-2015 02:33 PM

I bike every day, usually 10-30 miles..... And electric cars are freaking dangerous to bikers.

ErectMedia 08-24-2015 02:37 PM

If they sound like that I'll pay Hood Rats to torch them. :2 cents:

I see the headlines now.

Increase in EV leads to higher stabbing rate.

next: warning beepers on knives, to let people know they're about to get stabbed.

It's like the sound they use to put for UFOs in the 60s... careful old school UFO is on the road!!!

I thinks is good if they make the sound of a normal car but that doesn't goes well with noise pollution. They are trying to strike balance between awareness and pollution but my call for this sound is a total utter fail

to the points of who's responsible for what, roads a kind of made particularly for the cars so people have no business stepping on the road as they please unless it's a zebra crossing or something. Obviously as a driver you should look and be aware for idiots going on the road without looking and if you are crossing the road even on a crossing you should look for carmagedon racers...

I understand the appeal of a big throaty V8 engine. Car engineers spend lots of time to tune the exhaust note to be "just right" during the design of a new sports car. And of course, car owners spend more money swapping the exhausts and mufflers to get the sound they want, because.... just because. I get why a lot of people love the sound and think its cool.

But to me though, that sound doesn't impress me anymore, and I no longer think that sound is "cool".

The sound you hear is of course, air rushing out of the cylinder after each little explosion of each cylinder. This is actually wasted energy. The louder the car is, the more energy it takes just to move that air around. Even worse, it's dirty air. In North America at least, you need to have a catalytic converter to reduce pollution, which of course reduces air flow and efficiency, adding more weight, etc.

What I think is "Cool" is doing away with all of that. Electric means no explosions, so no exhaust, no muffler, no catalytic converter, so you save money, save weight, etc. It's just smarter and makes a lot more sense, and is therefore cool, to me.

Add a sci-fi whirring sound? Meh.. I'd still prefer it to be silent, but the sci-fi whirring sound seems kind of cool.

Peace.

Yes that's right!

videobunch 08-24-2015 06:35 PM

I think you should be able to change it like a ring tone. Make a custom one or choose from 20 presets.

shake 08-24-2015 06:41 PM

If they did choose a standardized sound like that, maybe it would be really easy to filter out using noise cancelling technology to those that don't need to hear it (like the driver of the car).
