Amazon pays Jeremy Clarkson $46M

This is incredible. I recently watched an episode of Top Gear, it was my first. Fun show, I never really understood the excitement but it was definitely enjoyable. Amazing that Amazon is laying down this much cash. Budget of $7M per episode!

Does the BBC have any regrets?

Last month, Jeremy Clarkson and the rest of the former "Top Gear" gang signed a monster deal with Amazon to create a new car show.

According to the Financial Times, sources say the deal signed by the former hosts of the popular BBC car show calls for Amazon to sink a reported $250 million into 36 episodes over three years.

Top Gear was huge, comparable to blockbuster tv series.

However I wonder if a rebrand will work, or if people have just accepted the end of Top Gear and moved on.

It's weird. I own evrt episode of top gear except for season 1 and the episode where Hammond crashed the dragster, and that's because those are not available here. And I've watched all my episodes many many times.

But after all the brouhaha, I'm really not interested anymore.

Lavish spending but it will go a long way toward propping up their burgeoning show business...

Yeah I agree, I think in most people's minds it's over.

I love that show so much and will watch almost anything those three guys do, but a huge part of Top Gear's appeal was in the production. The way they were filmed, the music and style was almost as important as the hosts.

A lot of shows try to copy that style and it never works. It looks like a cheap Youtube car show when done incorrectly. Even American Top Gear can't duplicate the production value of the original, and I bet they spent a lot of money trying. Forget about how annoying the American hosts are... that's another discussion.

All of this is on point. The stylistic production was fantastic. I'm not sure that they can duplicate that.

The American version doesn't have any of the appeal of the original.

That's a crazy amount to pay Clarkson too, I wonder what the other two are getting.

Cool. I love it that the American's picked him up enthusiastically notwithstanding a few insensitive comments aimed at American(ians) over the years. Of course, he was not that far off base in at least the insults I heard. We probably deserved it! Anyway, it should be fun. Let the epic road trips and relentless mocking begin. Again!

The further away they get from the original format, the less money Amazon will make.

It has to be racist, sexist, ageist and insult anyone they decide to. Or it's another car show about cars.

Its business, why would amazon care about that if that is good (they think so) for their bottom line?

Plus it is "ok" to insult Americans, try insulting Africans or illegals and only then you are in trouble.

Wow what a fucking joke and waste of moolah.
Just watch 'Counting Cars' on History and be done with it.

That would be said if they would not profit from this deal.

I am curious who was in the running for them, so that the price rose that high though. :2 cents:

That's like telling someone who wants to see a new Playboy video to just watch a grainy cell phone amateur vid from 2003.

Nickatilynx 08-29-2015 11:08 AM

Andy Wilman , the producer of Top Gear and Clarkson's childhood friend from Repton is part of the Amazon package , so its likely it will be very similar.

However Top Gear will now be shite. I HATE Chris Evans.

There's no way on God's green Earth that disaster will be profitable.

And women?

Clarkson's attraction is him insulting people.
