What's the going rate for website design?

A friend showed me his new website and it's complete SHIT. The web design company charged him $5,000, and it's nothing more than a Wordpress theme with very minor (if any) modifications.

That sounds like a lot for a standard brochure page with no database, ecommerce, SEO, etc. Back when I was doing mainstream sites back in the 90's and early 2000's, I never charged more than $2,000 for a site, and even then got some price resistance.

What's the going rate for a standard 20 page no bells and whistles websites these days? If you own a mainstream web firm, what do you charge? If you can get away with charging $5k these days, I know what business I'm getting back into! :thumbsup

question is not right at first place, is depends and vary from one site to another.

loreen 08-31-2015 02:05 AM

Around $1000 I'd say, but it depends a lot on what those extra 20 pages are.

Like Loreen mentioned, it all depends on what we are talking about when it comes to websites. There is so many varying degrees of interpretation when one person calls "standard" website. If it's a wordpress site, it should be $100-1000 is the norm. If we are talking scripts or standalone type scripts, they can go as high as $10K depending on CMS and features. FYI, I paid that mother fucker GFY scam artist Brandon Kagey from Scriptworkz $8K for a highly customized website which he failed to deliver. Mother fucker is a known scammer. So if this shithole Brandon Kagey/Eric Frye contacts you for web design, beware as this fucker has ripped off a few of us GFY vets already including myself in excess of $15-20K maybe more.

Non-exclusive is much cheaper, and as it was pointed out, the web is an awfully big place.

Exactly twice as long as it is from the middle to one end...

I have charged $500 for a Wordpress site and I have charged $12k for a Wordpress site.

It all depends on who's buying and what they're wanting.

Question is - do you (as a client) actually need "unique" design?
Maybe some themefirest or templatemonster theme + editing is better?
With them you can pick whatever you like and with unique design you don't know what you will get, often you get something that you like less than a template.

I never quote without details. The content, features, etc within each page can vary so much and often times I would wind up shooting myself in the foot.

Without bells and whistles though a custom Wordpress site with 20 pages of general content I would charge minimum $1,500. This includes on-site optimization and other stuff also.

I charge 5k for an eCommerce site with lots of products. So definitely crazy that they got your buddy for 5k for such a simple sounding site.

This right here. There are soooo many factors when it comes to websites and development. Some companies have very large budgets for their websites and an even bigger budget for marketing it, which really is one of the most important factors. These are the client that I really enjoy working with. They understand that results cost money and if you are willing to pay it can be done with a positive ROI.
