Jimmy Barnes & Cold Chisel. |

Saw the Angels live at Billboard in Melbourne in 1983, fucking awesome |
Russell Morris & The Rubes.

Midnight Oil
|
INXS before Michael Hutchence hung himself on a doorknob while in a drug induced and drunken state in a Sydney hotel while wanking or whatever he did.

technically, this is on their 1981 LP, but it was released as a single in 1980 :winkwink:
1980 Aus music didn't get all the way over here, but by ~1982 it was hitting hard. my 2nd concert i attended was INXS shabooh shobaah tour in ~1982, small club venue, maybe 100 people. hutchence ate a rose on stage, i thought it was pretty cool. |

LRB were great until John Farnham made them gay :upsidedow |
This hit the charts around December 1980.
|
MEO245 "Lady Love" October 1980 didn't make it into summer though
was followed up by the much better "Other Places" |

This was released in the 70's but it made it's way back into the charts during Summer 1980 and again in 1982.
It was filmed down Swanston Street, the main street in Melbourne. |

We all thought Split Enz were a pack of poofters, but they went on to Crowded House and made big bucks
|
And the Sports, had this track in the charts for most of 1980.

it's always struck me as an interesting transition, the no frills ac/dc compared to the over the top kiss. |
Darryl Cotton was also a bit of a poof, but you had to pretend you liked him to get in with the chicks.

This was 1980 Norman Gunston released a funny track picking on the people going to that concert in 1980 |
She came from London but became our own here
|
This band had to change their name and became pretty big.
|
Dugites 1980. The first Aussie band to own a Fairlight CMI (which for music nerds was the ultimate sampling synth of the 80s)
|
Melbourne got hit by new wave big time toward the end of 1980
|
Sumer of 1980/81 Australian Crawl owned the airwaves
|
Then Mental as Anything
|
My mates considered this lot poofters also, but had to pretend to like em for the girls.
Air Supply were the biggest grossing Aussie band in the early 80s - go figure |
Jo Jo Zep second time this year. |
Why does music suck so hard these days?
No one can sing, no one has a distinctive voice, no one can play their instruments. WTF? |
35 years ago, on the 23rd of this month (Sept.) ..... I was born.
|
The twin girls out of this 1980 hit were later in Neighbours
|
Dunno how this got in the charts in November 1980 but interesting trivia is that I rooted a girl who rooted a guy who used to root the lead singer :) [Apologies to TISM]
|
Flowers became Icehouse and Iva Davies became huge. |
For the sake of completeness
This was back in the days where Italians were wogs. |
Late November 1980
|
And this is where Midnight Oil shook their way into the consciousness of generations
|
The last big Aussie [ok NZ if you must but they came here because NZ sucked in the 80s] hit of 1980. Split Enz became Crowded House the rest was history. |
