They could have easily licensed the music without the band knowing. There is a difference between not having a license and not having the bands "social permission."

Publishing in music works two ways. If REM doesn't own the publishing to their music anymore whoever does can licenses it to whomever they want and REM has no say in how it is use. However, if they do still won the publishing rights they can choose not to license it and it doesn't matter how much someone would want to pay.

DJs playing for the public (so not for private events like weddings) then provide a list to the venue of the music that was played ? that?s it. This type of copyright licensing has absolutely nothing to do with weddings and private events. Just to be sure, I went straight to the source and asked these organizations directly.
