How long does it take to propergate DNS these days?

I've had a site on server A in the past and moved it to server B, changing the DNS from ns1.serverA.com to ms1.serverB.com like normal and it all happened almost instantly.

Last night (About 12 hours ago) I changed the dns back to server A in namecheap. As of this morning it says that the dns has been changed within namecheap, and doing a whois on the domain also shows the nameservers as having been changed - However it also shows the IP as being the IP of the old server company, not the one I changed it too...

Consequently when I go to my domain I get

Quote:

The server at MY-SITE.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
Question is, should I just be patient, or should I be contacting someone? If so, who?

1) The people whos server I have just pointed it to, to say its not working?
2) The older server people to tell them to release the IP?
or
3) Namecheap - They are handling the DNS ?

All ideas / comments welcome - Thanks :)

Have you cleared your browser's cache? Just a thought.

I just did something similar with namecheap the other day and as you stated it was more or less instantly.

Its not being my friend :( Like I say all records say that my dns is pointing to the correct server DNS, but the IP is still from the old server company...

Paste "ipconfig /flushdns" into a command window and hit enter...

Make sure you run command as admin - You can do this by right clicking on the icon and you will see an option to run as admin.....

That often works...

I've tried different browsers that have never been to the site and still no joy. I don't think its at my end cause of the old IP still showing in the WHOIS...

This is from the whois:
It shows I updated it yesterday, that the new domain servers (Dreamhost) are showing, but that the IP of the site is still showing as my old dedicated server with phatservers...

Its only a static site so it doesn't warrant a dedicated sever anymore, but I'm still stuck...

Who to contact?

Yeah, I'll do that in about an hour or so I think - Probably try deleting the site and re-adding it at dreamhost first :)

BalzacVinaigrette 10-23-2015 03:49 AM

I think you'll just have to wait a bit.

This is really weird. Despite having had the site on dreamhost in the past, and still being able to login to it with FTP etc, it no longer shows up in my control panel. I'll have to try and re-add it to see what happens.

OK, so for anyone who is interested, I've solved it - Heres what happened...

I used to host the site with dreamhost, but due to inactivity they must have removed it from their system... However, not from my server so I could still log into it via ftp. I downloaded the contents then did a re-add of the domain.

A few mins later, it was showing a dreamhost 'Site Coming Soon' page meaning the name had resolved. I'm uploading to the 'new' folder it created and it looks like all is good again - Thanks for the help anyway guys :thumbsup
