Will hacking nature protect us from climate change?
(CNN)To avoid a global warming catastrophe by the end of the century, humans may need to actually hack the climate.
Whether you call it hacking, or "fiddling with the knobs in the climate system," or the less-imaginative "geoengineering," it revolves around this question: Can humans game the system by using science to reverse global warming? One way to keep global average temperatures from warming beyond a catastrophic 2-degree-celsius tipping point, according to some experts, is to suck massive amounts of CO2 out of the atmosphere. I think there's not much choice. The amount of CO2 being put into the air HAS to drop, and anything we can do to reduce the current levels of CO2 has to be done too. Anything and everything should be explored including planting a lot more trees, and exploring other ways such as artificial trees as the video suggests to absorb the CO2.
It didn't mention other greenhouse gasses such as Methane though. This also has to be considered. |
