Apple sauce doesn't go with Cereal or the Poached egg on toast so unless he put it into the coffee as a sweetener, what was the point? Do people eat apple sauce on its own? Or this is something American that no-one outside will understand?
I have a theory that as he reached into his cupboard to get the coffee or the cereal, he discovers the bottle of apple sauce and sees that the USE BY DATE is coming up and also thinks he can uses extra energy as he is still not feeling well.

The first American to orbit the Earth, astronaut John Glenn, carried pureed applesauce in squeezable tubes on his initial space flight. Ham with applesauce was served to Gemini astronauts.

We do eat applesauce by itself. I agree it is better with potato pancakes or Spätzle.
