I built mine for $1400 :) over a year ago that must be some machine!

I have been building my own editing machines since 1997 and I will never buy a pre-configured system like a hot rod car I want control what is under the hood.

Anyone thinking about moving to 8K next year? I have shot in 6K with RED DRAGONS and you can definitely tell the difference. There is no need for shooting stills when you have 6k I can't wait till 8K hits the prosumer market in 2016 more resolution is always better for a number of reasons.

thanks!

For the time being any company ask me for editing content, all them wants to receive the raw content and do the edition and trailers at their style. (always I thought this is the best way because several producers/directors in a company/paysite it cause different editing styles and this is no good because no keep an own style in a site, at least that's how it works the major companies and many others smallest companies too)

Anyway I can provide edition too.

dual xeon blablabla - we have to deal with 3 camera signals and prefer to work directly with the H264 material rather than converting everything to Prores first and then having files of 10 times the size than before

Careful with the heat generated by the processors. If its getting toooo much set the affinity of the program to run a couple less processors. Slows the process a touch but you dont have to worry about frying the machine.

I not dealing with 12 bit RAW files kind of pointless when you are rendering back to 8 bit 4:2:0 once its rendered you won't see a difference to make it worth the time. I am dealing with 3 cameras directly H.264 with I7 Quad Core processors but what is more important is how many CUDA cores your graphics card has. It also goes without saying you must use SSD drives for the best transfer rates. I didn't get the most expensive video card but went for the most CUDA cores as possible. I didn't mention the extra $1000 I ended spending on extra SSD drives. With $4000 you can build a monster of a machine. 4K is definitely worth investing in.

So what is the point of buying a 4K camera if 8K is right around the corner??

Are we going to have to buy new friggin cameras every 6 months???

You could buy a camera that's upgradeable...like I did.

Very nice this is a new concept and RED does the same thing. Its only a matter of time before more cameras will have sensors that can be changed out. I am hoping they announce a GH5 soon but with the AG DVX200 just being released by Panasonic it may be a while.

Questions for 4K Shooters:

- Have you compared 4K to 2K Video in 48 or 60FPS? Do you see a big difference?
- Can consumers tell the difference?
- Are 2K 60FPS files easier or harder to manage / edit / than 4K files?

HD in 30 or 60 fps doesn't make any difference in handling

4K files are 4 times bigger (even though much depends on the codec)

and on a 4k monitor the difference is huge and everyone besides Stevie Wonder can see it

- not of a difference between 48 and 60, but definitely between those and 24fps
- consumers can barely tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, so no, most can't, and it's not because of whether or not it is 4k. It's all about sharpness. For example, you can have 4K, and a shitty lens, and it will look "soft"
- of course. 4K is 4X the processing power requirements

Your primary reasons to shoot in 4K should be:
- future proofing
- stream-lined production since you should be able to mostly forgo dedicated photo shoots

You have to consider 4k tvs are being sold presently & still not pushed, as HD tv's are still very popular. This won't change for another 5 or 10 years. 4k's good for our lives :thumbsup

We've bought a 4k camera, although, now still shooting in full HD, it's good for model content sites :2 cents:

This is why I will wait for the GH5 and hopefully 6k will be available in 60p like the RED DRAGONS are using now. The frame grabs are simply gorgeous compared to 4k and you can tell the difference. Also future cameras will have 15 + stops of dynamic range captured with the sensor allowing you to shoot in full sun without worrying about blowing out the highlights while keeping the skin properly exposed. The upgrade path for me is about every 2 years not every 6 months.

Any ideas on what we can expect from the GH5?

Panasonic GH5 « NEW CAMERA

My guess is that the GH5 might have the following features...
10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording for 4K and 1080 HD
LUTS for the on camera LCD so you can shoot LOG without looking at a muddy mess. (Sony did this for the A7S II already)
Better dynamic range ( 15 stops when shooting LOG )
Better low-light performance ( 1+ F-stops better )
4K 60p recording
1080 120p recording
Go back to Mini HDMI socket ( Micro HDMI is a disaster )
I am perfectly fine with the Micro 4/3 format over Super 35 and Full Frame its easier to focus and if I want better low light/ 35mm = BOKEH I can use my fast primes.

Jay-Rock 11-04-2015 01:01 PM

The AGDVX 200 looked nice for 4K 60p and may be a game changer for porn but only 4:2:0
recording internally not the best for color grading or shooting SLOG -L which it comes with.

Well all of those options would be really nice. I'm fairly new to GH4....picked up a couple of them over the summer and have REALLY enjoyed shooting with them -vs- Canon. So many awesome features that are great for filmmakers - I hope they continue that trend with the GH5 :thumbsup
