Serious Question: What is a GFY "Sig Whore"?
Is it someone who just likes attention? Is their goal to reach 50k posts so they get a different color? Or is there actual money to be made? I mean, if you're an invalid and you choose to pass your time on Internet Forums, an extra $20-30 a day could be seen as a "paid hobby", adding nicely to your disability check.
I'd really like to know what sig whore means in GFY parlance. |

Originally, it was meant as a putdown but it has taken a life of its own. It's funny how words morph over time. Still, it all boils down to marketing. $20 to $30 a day in places like the Philippines, India, Thailand, Bangladesh, etc = decent enough money for even recent college grads. While I do all my forum posts, I can see why companies would hire outsourcing companies to do forum posts. Still.... Just like in ANY OTHER KIND OF ONLINE PROMOTIONS there's a right way and a wrong way to do things... Here are some basic rules c/o webmasterlabor.com :) :) :) Check out Rule #8 first :) 1) Post no less than 10 words or 2 lines (totaling 10 words) 2) ENGAGE the idea posted by the OP - ie., stay on topic / be relevant 3) Keep the discussion going. Don't just drop a line and leave. 4) Sometimes, a laughing smiley would suffice but DON'T OVERDO IT. Don't become known as the laughing smiley dude. 5) When sharing News, make sure you use an engaging headline AND add value by providing commentary either in the description text or the headline. Remember: you're a CONTENT CURATOR. Think along the lines of Huff Po or Drudge Report. 6) If you can, add source citation links. These are particularly helpful and illuminating in political discussions 6A) Don't use $10 words when 25 cent words can do. Why? In research study after research study, the average reading and comprehension level of English markets is around the 8th grade. It's not because these individuals didn't finish high school but because people are busy and are in a HURRY. They don't want you to dissect the finer points of Camus. They want you to GET ON WITH IT, bro! :1orglaugh 7) Have FUN. It's all about enjoying the company of community members. The more you give, the more you receive, the richer everyone becomes (in terms of value) 8) There are always exceptions to the rules but stick to these and you can build up a solid brand soon enough. It's all about ADDING VALUE (not because you SAY IT but because you DO IT). |
Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

9) don't post book length posts explaining something so basic that even silver monkey gets it :2 cents: I use to think I'd just sigwhore after I shut my program down but really I can't stand most of the people here and this place depresses me more than my actual life.. So now I just work on my affiliate sites and only post here when I have nothing better to do. |
Cool story bro.
See sig. |
Long ago in a time when GFY was a relevant industry site and not just a crazy madhouse of trolls and whatnot, a person could make money by being a "sig whore".
The name basically comes from the fact that a person would be paid by a studio (or some website owner) to post on GFY and then their signature promotes said affiliate program. Like in my case, every time I make a post my signature whores out whatever particular product or service I'm trying to promote right now. |

Here's one that stands out to me: https://gfy.com/search.php?searchid=5299430 Look past the few threads started by this user, and you'll see most of their posts in threads consist of such thoughtful insight as "Cool content, buddy," "Good job!" and "Way to go!" |
$20-$30 a day - Really?..
I could move to India and happily live on that..... |
$20-30 from sig only???

I have a high end 4 bedroom condo in Delhi with amazing facilities, 24 hour security, private restaurants, clubs, private hospital, swimming pool, gym, sauna, spa, bank, function rooms and all the works and will rent at around 40,000 rupees a month and it would be better than anything in the western world in terms of bang for buck. Price is lower if you find something not close to a metro station. If you're just renting a room in Delhi and live quite modestly you could live comfortably on less than 20,000 rupees a month in a high end place where other expats live. There are loads of foreigners there but you have to remember that once you leave your luxury "zone" you're in a dusty, hot environment which has awful infrastructure. It's also very polluted because its developing more quickly than China right now. To give an idea a simple meal in a local café costs less than 150 rupees ($1.50) and you can hire a taxi for a full day (8 hours) inside less than 1000 rupees (approx. $15 USD). So India is cheap but there are far better places in Asia for a western person to live cheaply in my view such as South East Asia. |

Its also a safe place but it is far less safe for women. However, I note that there's a huge expat community and many women living in my condo area which is mostly Americans, Canadians, Thais, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese here. You see them all the time walking around freely on the streets, in local shopping malls etc and they own/run most of the decent shops here. It's also a good place to do business because labour is so cheap and English is so widely spoken but unfortunately, the level of bureaucracy is just insane. It's a paperwork society which is something India learned from the long period of British rule. That said, I really get the sense that India will be a far better place to live in 10 years from now but I think a country like in South East asia is probably going to be only slightly more expensive and offers you a great deal more in terms of quality right now. In fact, I always tell people you could start a business anywhere in Asia right now and you'd be in the right place at the right time to do something great. :2 cents: |

it has to be pennies. What retard would pay brasshat even $5 a month? The people buying his sig must have their heads up their brass.

Anyway, the thread starter's $20 to $30 range is not far off the mark if you hit several forums as part of a forum/social media marketing/blog comment marketing campaign. |

As far as today's rates I'm not sure but it was not uncommon back in the day to pay someone who posted a minimum of 3 to 5 times a day per board * 5 boards -- $300 to $500 a month.
For today? Do people still pay? Are there even still 3 to 5 relevant industry boards? :P I don't even know. I couldn't imagine there would be much value paying a board whore (or sig whore) for a site like GFY anymore. The days of this site being industry relevant kind of went out the window years ago. But years ago, fuck yeah. Totally worth every damn penny to pay someone to be a board whore. |
sig whore = someone who can't cut it in the industry
