Is it just me or does it read more and more like some kinda jamaican patois toward the end? I don't mean the letters in the words, I mean how it would sound when saying it.

yea i think it's a phonetic old english version of beowulf.. here is how it should look like:

I agree, English has actually shed a few letters down to the 26 we have today. letters they still used back then.

Yes and no... agree that it is poetic but it was also meant to be simple and straightforward and easily understood so the language was "common" in the sense of not being elevated above the commoners level of education or knowledge.
