That's not really shocking. A lot of public services and businesses run on really old software. Rebuilding old software is a monumental task and not something to be taken lightly. It usually just gets put off and put off and put off, until it crashes like this.

Pay attention to the computer screens you see the next time you are in a retail store. Seeing Windows 95 is not uncommon, and that's a retail store that most likely does not have heavy needs.

you'd be surprised how much OS/2 is still around - mainly banking and logistics

OS2 wasn't Y2K compliant. I doubt any financial institutions still use them.

Ironic that you reference Mecca in the thread after what happened in Paris yesterday.

It is oddly appropriate however...Allahu akbar

Our payroll program was still releasing dos updates every year up until about 2 years ago.

sneak peak of their newest flight simulator:

Yep, and it took this long before it crashed.
The management must be idiots to not have upgraded to daily crashes.

Just imagine an OS without a web browser, video player or flash games for your employees to work on
while trying to keep planes from crashing.

This is Flight Simulator by Sub-Logic on the TRS-80. I think it had a frame rate of 1 or 2 FPS only. Loved it.
