US probe sends supplement stocks plunging

Quote:

U.S. officials announced a broad range of actions against nutritional supplement companies Tuesday, alleging some firms made deceptive claims about the effectiveness of their products.

Shares of GNC, Vitamin Shoppe and Herbalife all fell earlier in the day after federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration, announced they would release results of an investigation. USPlabs, which made the workout supplement Jack3d, and six of its executives face criminal charges for the unlawful sale of the nutritional supplement, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday in announcing a larger probe by multiple federal agencies aimed at stemming the sale of unproven nutritional supplements.

Six executives with USPlabs LLC and a related company, S.K. Laboratories, face criminal charges related to the sale of unlawful dietary supplements. Four were arrested on Tuesday and two are expected to surrender, the Justice department said.

In a sweep, the Department of Justice and federal partners announced Tuesday that they are pursuing criminal and civil cases against more than 100 makers and marketers of dietary supplements, hoping to scrub out deceptive and unproven products. The actions follow a year-long effort to cleanse the profitable industry of products that threaten public health, the department said.

I wonder how hard this one will hit. Nutras got hit pretty hard a while ago with continuity offers and they're still recovering.
