How Many Do You Own?

I'm doing some year-end cleaning and I've just learned that I own close to 500 domains. Most of which I don't do anything with. Of those that I actually do something with, the 80/20 rule applies in terms of revenue and earnings. My question for you is this...how many domains do you own and how many actually make you money? Trying to decide whether keeping all these is a huge waste of money given that I don't use 80% of them for anything.

We have around 1000 in total but less than 1% are adult. All have value, given that we started with over 2000 and slowly dropped around 1000 over a 15 year period. Hard to say how many make money as most are parked and produce enough revenue to pay renewals but not much more. The value of these is a mostly capital value in the resale markets.

Vendot thanks for the feedback. Yea, I'm finding it extremely difficult to build and maintain everything. :) Having taken that approach for years building small buckets, I think I wish I built one or two large instead lol. Hindsight is always 20/20 though right.

It's always better to focus in my view. If you have mainstream domains, however, now is a GREAT time to sell some with all the IPO, M&A and the stockmarket hasn't started crashing yet. I posted a while ago about the massive Domain Name Boom that seems to be gathering steam as I write this:

If they are surplus prune them.
Why own something, and pay yearly a renewal fee, to own something that is useless to you?

EMD domain names are of limited value. If the domain names are just distractions that don't make you any money -- why keep them unless they serve as an "investment portfolio" or reasonable future development? A lot of the domains I have gotten rid of were bought for development ideas that I have abandoned now -- the names are useless distractions.

Agreed. I'm trimming now. Distractions suck. They cost money. They more than often don't produce good results. Anything I'm not building in the next 12 months is going. Anything not worth a lot is gone. I don't care how long I've had it.

(521) at this exact moment, (76) developed, (445) for sale (mostly aged mainstream keyword .coms)
I put domain sales pages on the (445) to increase purchase inquires and run advertising spots across the network to replace the lost parking revenue. :2 cents:

That's insane agro. If they're aged keyword dot coms, they must have some value in todays market, why don't you just park them at DomainNameSales.com - that's Frank Schilling's platform.

They're much better than Sedo, pay well and if you're portfolio is high quality you should get accepted to the program easily enough. Offers through the platform do not have to be sold through their brokers, you can manage sales yourself if you so wish.

BlackCrayon 12-16-2015 08:47 AM

any domains you guys want to drop, feel free to email them to me and I'd pay 10-20 bucks for them if i like them. better than just dropping them.

SekobA 12-16-2015 08:50 AM

SIK 12-16-2015 08:54 AM

of course there is. not sure what registrar you use but most would allow you to select all domains and then renew.

SIK 12-16-2015 08:56 AM

I use a small company (croatian one), and as soon as I hit "post" I decided to write them an email on what can they do regarding that :D

ah yeah some of those euro registrars operate strangely and don't make it easy.

I know Frank and have all of the top accounts as been selling domains for 13+ years anywhere from 1-100k+.

A) Park somewhere else and split the parking income with a small sales link on a page.

B) Put my own sales pages on my own server which increases inquiries/sales as the sales angle can't be missed and allows me to have full statistics and put my own ads or sell ads to others across the entire 445 block of domains in 1 quick edit. I make more in affiliate income and direct ad sales then parking income would generate. Also allows ya to build your own database of end user domain buyers.

Started with (A) in 2002, (B) makes more sense now as don't really need help so like to keep it all in house. Still have my domains listed at Sedo, GoDaddy, Afternic, DomainNameSales but most sales happen direct as my pages drive them in.

suesheboy 12-16-2015 09:12 AM
