Dass raciss. Unless it would be so if they banned a play in some Indian or Camel language.

Every so often the boom must get lowered to remind you English-Quebecers you are second class citizens.

I have to laugh at how much the French walk over you guys.

It's not funny... but its not sad either. It's just, strange.

Quebec and especially Montreal are huge tourist destinations. The culture here is very proudly french Quebecois and it's totally cool. I also understand that they want to preserve the language and culture. Unfortunately the tactics that are used are baffling. Instead of encouraging French, they discourage English or other languages.

If I were a tourist coming to Montreal, I would love to see tiny little English translations under big giant French signs. This would tell me what the words mean, and teach me something at the same time. Furthermore I'd feel very welcome in this strange land.

Quebec should be really jumping through hoops right now to get tourists to come because the American dollar is so strong, Every tourist business imaginable can offer huge discounts to American tourists and still make a killer profit. But no. nope. nada.

And to be fair, it's not the people that want this. It's just the law, and Bill 101.

It always comes down to people wanting it, the mighty few loud people who want to maintain this type of idiocy.

It is sad. Montreal used to be at least 50% english and west Quebec was mostly english. But the language battles over the last 45 years have driven many of the english speakers out. My mother was born in a little village in west Quebec that was mostly Irish and English farmers. You go there now and many of the english names are being changed to french ones. They are completely wiping out the heritage of all of the historically non-french areas of the province. Basically all that is left are all of the english, irish and scottish names on the old tombstones in the cemeteries and some towns that have managed to retain their english names for now.

And all for what? To save the french language from the cultural onslaught of a Shakespeare play? That's like an english town banning a french opera.

What a joke.

Dismissing shitty behavior as "we're just a proud people" is like the super cunty woman saying "most people think I'm a bitch just because I speak my mind". Nope! People think you're a bitch because you are a bitch. I've only heard great things about Quebec and Montreal as cities. Never once in my life heard a good thing about the people. Not even from Canadians.

trevesty 12-22-2015 01:58 PM

When my wife and I lived in QC for a year, it blew our mind how "anti-English" a lot of institutions and some people were. On the flip side, there were many who were more than helpful / kind / awesome. The total emphasis on French and the (mostly) terrible English spoken by most leaves those in the province at a severe disadvantage in the global market.

You do not cease to amaze me showing off your "logic".

I speak loudly against double standard mongering anti white libbies (of course this thread was not about that and I just put a troll here to annoy dimwits like you) = I never met different race people. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Epic logic :thumbsup:1orglaugh

And hen there's stuff like this:

French-language group has a problem with the pronunciation of P.K. Subban's name

Quote:

Canadiens star defenceman P.K. Subban has been unwittingly dragged into Quebecâ??s language debate after a French-language protection group voiced its concern with how his name is pronounced by sports commentators.

In a letter obtained by La Presse, the Association pour le soutien et lâ??usage de la langue française (ASULF) wants French commentators to stop saying his name in English, (Pee-Kay Subban). Instead, they want them to pronounce it as Pay-Kah Subban.

yep, they are totally isolating themselves. not to mention there are a lot of people who will treat you poorly for speaking english to them. i hate going to stores in quebec. half the time even if they can speak english to you they won't.

and to EonBlue's point, yes that is happening. my girlfriend's family is from west quebec, they are english speaking and their family have been there for over 100 years but they get nothing but hassles for being english. dealing with french street signs isn't that bad (but still ignorant) but trying to deal with the health care system and government with forms all in french is essentially saying speak french or get out.

They need a law where everything has to be spoken and written in Canadian

Lol, remind me earlier at the office... Our photoshop is in french so I asked if I could get it in english since I was struggling to figure out what was what (I live in Québec and french is my native language...)

So the support team informed me that it was due to a law... Damn, what a productivity hole :1orglaugh
