Thirty Years Since The Death Of Dian Fossey

BBC - Earth - The woman who gave her life to save the gorillas

Great read on the BBC website, some of you will remember her story. I also loved that movie: "Gorillas In The Mist" and remembered being fascinated by it. What an amazing woman and a very tragic story.

I'm glad people remember her.

Her work was monumental and continues to bless us today.

There have been many great naturalists/scientists of the past that are threatened by obscurity.

Here's another person to read up on: Alexander von Humboldt

Dude's a giant of history but now largely forgotten.

When I was at school there was a girl called Diane Fossey who died of Cancer :(

Her father paid for the building of a new sports changing room block for the school- The 'Fossey Block' as it was known.

I never met her as she had already died by the time I started at the school but I remember her older brother taught me some computer stuff on the first computer I ever saw 'in the wild'

What this has to do with the thread is at the least, extremely tenuous, I admit - But the title made me remember her :)

Nice story but if you're in the UK then the Fossey Block might be nothing but a portacabin. Cold, damp and temporary.

She would roll over in her grave if she saw all the shit we have continued to do with the planet!

The environmental destruction, pollution and the rate of species extinction higher than ever...all while we continue to pollute the planet with more useless humans - PATHETIC

She was rare and one of a very few motivated people with the determination and the heart and the focus to understand them and protect them against threats. It probably took her life in the end.

These days yes you are right, but 40 odd years ago it involved refurbishing an old brick stable block that they used to keep horses in, and bringing it up to the top end current standard of the time :)

As far as I'm aware its still part of the school today :thumbsup
