my new year's resolution: I'm going back to single tasking.

fuck multitasking.

it takes the fun out of doing shit, takes all tasks longer, and is more prone to error.

besides, from what i understand, we don't multitask even when we think we are, we're just shifting gears and refocusing multiple times on single tasks.

Sly 12-29-2015 12:22 PM

Multitasking is overrated garbage. We are not built for it. Eliminate distractions for 60 minutes and focus on one task. Watch how much you get done.

The Porn Nerd 12-29-2015 12:33 PM

Can I share a secret to my success kind of thing? Before I got into this biz I couldn't finish jack shit. I was always starting something, doing five things at once, never finishing anything. 85% was 'good enough', only it wasn't.

When I had to learn how to build websites I realized I was old, dumb and slow - compared to the motivated 21 year olds out there. So I said fuck it, I will do one thing, FINISH IT, then move on and see where it gets me....know what? I turned around a year later and I had a network of 16 websites! I could pay my fucking rent without my mom's help! Yay!! Sad but true.

Now I am ADDICTED to finishing shit. I don't care if this means I will get to the other 18 things when I'm done and they may be delayed. Most things can wait until I am FINISHED dammit. LOL

Good for you dyna mo. Get 'r done!!

When i go to multitask i get 0 done , when i'm working on one project something get's done but not when multitasking!

RummyBoy 12-29-2015 10:46 PM

Yep, don't believe any of that mainstream bullshit that you have to be "good at multi-tasking".

Next time anyone goes for a job and gets told that, you should reply: "I can poke you in the eye and slap your fat ass at the same time, is that multi-tasking?" FUCK THEM! :1orglaugh

Single tasking is where it is at!

ErectMedia 12-29-2015 10:49 PM

I just make a list in my iPhone by Priority and start on the most important thing until complete. Problem is usually as I eliminate 1 thing from the list 2 more get added. :1orglaugh

Den BongaCash 12-30-2015 02:56 AM

Prioritize tasks. If everything is number #1, then I asses the value, which is "deadline-yesterday" urgent and try to focus on this task, mainly. I heard that people who multitask are not being more productive, they just feel more emotionally satisfied from their work.

I read another method. You add all your tasks and you start with the one you like to do most. Then you cross it out and do another one you like to do most. The point of it is that it is easier that way. Apparently that is one of the better ways to do things.
PS: of course it seems that you may never get to some tasks you hate that way. I need to get back to that article and see what they have to say about that :) Or actually not, the point is that you do it until the last one is done anyway.

Yeah, when you multitask you do not do anything much, half the time spent thinking about other tasks, switching and so on. Sometimes you can see that you have not finished any single task for some time, wheres if you did tasks one by one you could have finished 3 in that time easily.

mineistaken 12-30-2015 02:26 PM

By the way - could it be that women are better at multitasking?
I think I read somewhere that they can do (or think) 2+ tasks at one moment while men can not. After reading that I noticed things like that in real life, when I can not have "2 minds" at once women can. I was surprised plenty of times.

I'm pretty good at drinking beer while getting a blow job.

Actually I just did something similar last week. I made a list of all the things that I feel MUST be done. Then I looked at that list and checked off the things I like to do or feel I am best at. That left me a list of things I hate to do (or simply was not doing) so that told me I need to hire someone to do those things.

MakeMeGrrrrowl 12-30-2015 02:52 PM

If I did not multitask, I would complete nothing. When I force myself to try and stick to one thing - avoidance is all I do. Avoid everything and then nothing gets done.

Everyone has a system and you just have to figure out what works best for your brain and the right time of the day.

I bet you're not. I bet you're only half as good at it as when you're only drinking beer.

If you are enjoying that blowjob while drinking the beer, you are not drinking good enough beer!

He needs baddog's consultation about the beer :thumbsup

Sometimes you don't have a choice, but holy shit I really appreciate when I can focus on one thing.

TheSquealer 12-30-2015 07:34 PM

Since there is no such thing as multi tasking and it's only something ADD people say to rationalize their mental bouncing around and inability to focus attention, I'd say you've accomplished your mission just by waking up and being you.

your brain cannot focus conscious attention on more than one thing at once. Ask any illusionist/magician or pickpocket :)

your brain tends to bounce back and forth quickly in a fleeting manner between things but cannot focus conscious attention on more than one thing which is why I can bump into you, point up in the sky yelling "oh my god, is that a spaceship?!?!?!" as put my hand in your pocket and take your wallet without you being aware of it. As long as your conscious attention is focused on something, someone can touch you, grope you etc and it will never rise to your attention in that moment. This is how a watch can be removed from your wrist without you knowing it or feeling it in the moment.

Actually, to be a total anal retentive nerd, what you are really talking about are "pattern interrupts". When you interrupt a pattern it's hard for the human brain to focus on two things at once. It goes into defense mode. Distraction is a kind of mild shock. When people are in shock they are most compliant. Ever have a conversation then someone interrupts with a totally different topic then you cannot remember what you were just talking about? Like that. They interrupted your pattern (conversation).

The average human mind can generally "focus" on seven, plus or minus two, things at once (7 +or- 2). Try naming brands of cigarettes or sports cars. By the time you get to five, or seven, or nine (if you're really smart), you begin to forget the first couple you listed.

NLP is so fascinating!

mce 12-30-2015 08:18 PM

OP dropped some MAJOR KNOWLEDGE

I don't know about other people but unless I focus on ONE THING and ONE THING ALONE, I can't do much of anything.

It's all about setting your sites on ONE target, ENGAGING until it's DUST...

then moving on.

At least, that's what works for me

So for 2016 my daily to do lists will be 3 single items that the process above can accomodate

Yeah, I think I found it out long time ago in a very simple way - I was pouring some water with my one hand and tried to stir cup of tea with another. And while I did them somehow it was not a smooth process and I could think only about one or another at any moment. So lets say at the moment I thought about stirring I was not able to stop the water pouring if that was needed.
