Homicide victim talking to 911 dispatch when shot, killed
Yonel Meus was talking to 911 dispatch when shot, killed in Orlando - Orlando Sentinel
The year's first homicide victim was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when he was shot and killed early Friday, according to a police report. Yonel Meus, 36, was telling the dispatcher about the altercation he had minutes earlier with two men at a 7-Eleven on Silver Star Road near Dardenelle Drive around 3 a.m. New Year's Day. Police say Meus was nearly struck when a vehicle was backing up in the parking lot. He slapped on the vehicle's trunk and an argument ensued. He was walking away when he told the dispatcher the men were approaching him, according to police. The men can be heard on the call demanding his cell phone and then there was a physical altercation, police said in the report. One of the men tells the other to shoot Meus, police said. That's when a single gunshot is heard, police said. The call was not released but described in the report. Meus was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was shot in the upper chest, police said. The alleged shooter, Randell Burton, 20, and Dante Thomas, 19, are charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. |
