I would say that this man was with friends in hot air balloon, and the balloon started to fall because it was too heavy. Then they drew sticks to decide who would have to jump out of the balloon.

I guess this man drew the shortest stick and died when he jumped out of hot air balloon.

He was using the stick to look for water and he died of thirst before finding water with his stick. You have seen them before. The stick that will move when it detects water.
