backup - what do you use?
I've noticed I'm paying nice bucks for server (sites) backups so I'm pondering if I should change something or use a different method
Maybe even just go back to old school backup? 2 external hard drives on which I'd monthly do a full backup + database dumps Or even both, servers with full block backup as I have currently + offline ones? So anyway.. what do you guys use? |
Multiple server backups per day + a Drobo 5N.

I have two external 1TB drives, and 500GB SSD. I also signed up for Crash Plan (code42.com) online data storage, and it just saved my ass since my system HD crashed over the holidays. Since internet speed is so fast now, and you can download gzip server backups pretty quick, save the money and run backups yourself. :thumbsup

To add...I don't have any "monster" sites, most of my sites run small databases and aren't packed full of videos. My largest site is just over 1.5GB - mostly images. If you have a huge site, running and downloading your own backups may not be manageable, or very productive. One size shoe does not fit all.

I use rsync, rsnapshot, tarsnap, and percona xtrabackup & automysqlbackup along with regular tar backups too. I rsync everything over to a $2/month dedicated server at Online.net, several cheap yearly virtual machines, and keep local backup copies as well.

Company server infrastructure: TSM and Veeam to our second-site. Outsourced to ISO certified host
Websites: Rsync files to second-site server(inhouse), Mysql log-backup every 1 hour on all sites with value Private: Sync all files(documents and images) to Office365 Onedrive |
i was shopping for dedicated server for daily db and html backup and then i found googl cloud storage, its worth it... + peace of mind.
thew only issue i faced is implementing daily backup using google api system. but now its completely automatic., daily db + html backups with password protected , transferred to google cloud using https .,.,and prices are not that expensive. unless you plan on storing terabytes 's of data. i am planning to keep/store last 6 months daily backups, to keep cost low. |
some nice backup options are mention, I googled out most of them, thanks people :)
addon question - regarding additional OFFLINE backups, is there some good software to sync up with server from the computer and check for new stuff to do a backup? my sites are roughl 1.5 TB all together |

rsync.net isn't bad.

We have a server just for backups.

Amazon S3 mounted as drive for backups... cheap and reliable way... (not the fastest solution though...)
