How has Obama done?

So we are coming up on the end of his run. How has he done?

Ecomony - booming. Pretty hard to argue this one. I am not sure he did much but maybe that is the best move.

Health care - Prices are higher. We are not getting the benefit as it is possibly repealed every other day. Can they roll it back and kick tons of people back off? I have to say neutral but long time it still has the chance of being a home run.

Iran - I mention it as if this works it would be nice feather. If they nuke us in 5 years, it will be all his fault even if its not.

Iraq/Afghanistan - got us out. Thumbs up on this. Did it create Isis? Maybe. Sort of hard to blame him.

Anything I am missing?

Are we better off after 8 years? I have to say yes. Overall his time in office went pretty well.

Rochard 01-28-2016 08:31 AM

I believe he has done well.

The economy was by far the most important issue. This was our lowest point since the Great Depression. People were loosing their jobs and their houses. My community was hit really hard; We were the fastest growing city in the country from 2000-2010 with a 280% increase (Lincoln, California) so we had lots of new, crappy loans. Building projects just stopped including a huge condo complex and multiple businesses that were half built, stopped, and eventually town down. Our city government was on a massive upswing, building fire stations and hiring police officers, new roads, etc... Everything came grinding to a halt and entire sections of our city here were deserted.

What we needed with the economy was a slow and steady hand, and some smart decisions. And that's what we got with Obama.

It was unfair that Obama got blasted and blamed for the economy when he didn't cause it and was trying to fix it. Yet still today some people believe things are "horrible" although we have a 5% unemployment rate. This has gotten nasty with the other side just cherry picking bad stats and hitting on that.

The economy is by far the most important thing for us. The rest is blah.

Healthcare - Hasn't had much of an effect on me. I had healthcare before, and I have the same exact healthcare now. It went up a bit, but, it was going to go up no matter what. It does every year. More people than ever before have healthcare, so it seems Obamacare is really working. Our government needs to invest it's time in fixing what is wrong, not trying to get rid of it.

Iran - Whatever. If Iran had nukes in the morning it doesn't change anything. Russia, China, India, and Pakistan all have nuclear weapons and it hasn't changed a damn thing. So who the fuck cares? If Iran launches any kind of a nuclear attack, their entire country would become a glass parking lot instantly.

Iraq/Afghanistan - Our military performed flawlessly, but we were stuck in two never ending wars. Our military cannot be used as a decades long occupation force. Time for us to leave.

The politics has changed in Washington DC. It's no longer about doing the right thing, it's about beating the other side. This is wrong.

GDP is still very low. Needs to be over 4% to be "booming".

Over 40% of the people of age to be in the workforce are unemployed. The workforce percentage of employed people is at historical lows (they don't tell you that with the new way they count "unemployment rates").

I would say the economy is crippling along. Still hasn't recovered from the crash of 2008.
It is historically the longest period of "recovery" in history. The Great Depression had a faster "recovery" (thanks WW2).

Is that Obama's fault?
In my opinion he made several moves that hindered progress. Starting with ObamaCare.
And many things he DIDN'T do that could have helped move the economy in my opinion.

I don't think any historians or economists will look back on the Obama years as "booming" in any way, shape, or form.

mikesouth 01-28-2016 10:53 AM

In many areas he has done well but where he and most of the past presidents fail is on civil liberties. with each successive President we have become more of a police state I expected (for some reason) that Obama would not renew The Patriot Act, the he did cementing the real truth that the two parties are really one and the same and their objective is a more authoritarian government.

I give BO a C-

He turned out to be a much more polarizing Potus than I expected. But he has done some good things. He contributed to restoring the economy but he's not responsible for it. Besides, there's a massive income disparity now and median household wages have fallen.

He was also woefully inadequate on foreign policy.

Race relations are also very poor right now and gun sales skyrocketed under BO, much of those sales to democratic households.

Totally agree,
I live in LA and I can't drive anywhere without seeing the homeless and I can't go anywhere without a panderer hitting me up for loose change.
This is not the world the liberals see if they continue to support that loser.

And yes, jobs and the economy are the same and the most important.

Of course you disagree.

Oddly enough I was in LA for Christmas - I biked twenty miles through LA and Hollywood - and I don't recall seeing a single homeless person. I don't think the number of homeless people you see in LA is an indication of the economy - There was still homeless people in LA when Bush first took office.

Vendzilla 01-28-2016 11:19 AM

Obama's overall average approval rating is now just a hair better than president Carters.

Jimmy Carter
45.5

Ronald Reagan
52.8

George H.W. Bush
60.9

Bill Clinton
55.1

George W. Bush
49.4

Barrack Obama
46.7

We use the U3 unemployment rate as the official rate. We always have; This is the standard.

But if you insist, let's compare other formats. Let's compare U3 to U5 and U6 - same thing. We peaked in 2010, and it's come down since.

The truth is Republicans try to scare us saying "the real unemployment rate isn't 5%, it's 10%". That's a scare tactic meant to make Obama look bad, and it's wrong. The truth is the U6 unemployment rate peaked at 17% in 2010, and has almost been cut in half since then.

The reality is that unemployment in all cases is coming down since peaking at 2010.

If you want to compare apples to apples, let's do that. The current U6 unemployment rate is 9.9%. In September of 2003 it was 10.2%. In other words, currently we are doing better with the U6 unemployment rate after the recession under Obama than we were doing long before the recession under Bush.

Not good enough for you? Great, let's compare the U5 rate. Currently it's 6.1%. In June of 2003 it was 7.2%.

No matter how you look at it, the unemployment rate across the board is better under Obama after the recession than it was under Bush long before the recession. If that is not enough, unemployment by all measures continue to fall.

TheLegacy 01-28-2016 11:56 AM

The parties are always at war no matter what. Even if a solution for anything is found the opposing party would refuse it simply because it wasn't their party's idea and don't want to give credit to anyone not flying their flag. Same is true in other countries as well.

Everything he has done will be undone within this year or shortly thereafter. The pumped up stock market and economy is already unraveling. I'm reading articles of tens of thousand job layoffs daily. The largest insurers are bailing on obamacare, etc etc.. The Obama bubble is over. Get prepared now.

I forgot Bin Laden.

Homeless - Are you guys nuts? There were tent camps around the country when he took over. Right where I live they had taken over the park. It might not be getting better or has slipped back but over the 8 years the trend is WAY better.

Unemployment is way down. This is the base number. Jobless claims is at some 30 year low. Employment as a % of population is less good and we know that is because baby boomers are retiring. That is going to get worse and no one can change that.

GDP Growth - I agree it is less robust then anyone would like.

So it's actually more, 16.1 million.

so Under Obama, 8.7 new jobs, 16.1 million more people

Shows that the new jobs are not keeping up with the increase in population
And why we have the lowest workforce participation rate since president Carter
Workforce Participation rate when Obama took office in the middle of a recession was 65.7 and currently stands at 62.6

And why the unemployment rate is complete bull shit!

and it gets worse

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment

EDITORIAL: Obama's unemployment rate lies exposed by reality - Washington Times

You are telling me that the population in the United States has increased by fourteen million people and yet our employment rate - no matter what version of the unemployment rate you are using - has dropped to levels not seen since 2003.... Isn't that even more impressive?

Nah, you must be correct. The United States unemployment rate must be one of the most tracked numbers across the country, if not around the world. But it must be wrong and must be bullshit.
