I find this very strange. I keep thinking to myself why are you saying God bless you to me, God certainly did not bless YOU! Seeing as you are homeless, I don't think "God" really has your back here.
Anyway, just some random thoughts!

Perhaps God was blessing them by putting the thought in your head to give money.

They say it because they are religious and grateful;
otherwise they'd shoot you in the head and take all your money.
But then they'd rent a place with all the money and not be homeless so they would never ask anybody for money.

Half the people outside shopping supermarkets in Spain are signed on to the benefits system, however, they need to have work, for over 16hr's a week.....

Also, you'll find in London, some of the "homeless people", the guys with a card & asking for money, have the Porsche parked around the corner & make over 2000 a day on the busy London streets!

i've found that there are 2 ways to get homeless to stop saying that to me when i donate to them

1. stop donating to homeless (recommended)

2. save them the trip to the liquor store and just give them a bottle of vodka. the cheap shit from the bottom shelf, in the plastic jug so when they drop it. they don't say god bless you then, they say awwww shit yeah bruther!

I can say as fact. Yes, the Spanish have to work to claim their benefits, this placing lots of people in the place of sitting by supermarkets with a card. This happens more than it doesn't. So in reality, the statistics would & are high.

Regarding the British, yes, many of the buskers & "homeless with a card" are not homeless & do make more money than you every day.

I wanted to bump this and say that I've probably given about 8 - 10 homeless people $ since my last post and each and every single one of them said, "God bless you." WHYYYYYYY?

I give a bottle of cheap gin & $10 when I see a homeless drunk with big liver spots, best to speed things along for them IMO
