Bernie Sanders: When you're white, you don't know what it's like to be poor

  • there are no poor white people
  • Trump supporters are all white trash uneducated people

Time to pick one, Bernie.

Any white person still voting for Bernie Sanders after his comment is completely hopeless.

Penny24Seven 03-07-2016 06:35 AM

What does he call a group of poor white people all living in one area? Or is there no such thing

Not sure where you live but we don't really have that here in the Midwest unless you count small towns.

I'm white and I'll continue to back Bernie with gusto.

Isn't Sanders poor? Net worth of $300,000 at his age?

There is a white ghetto in Baltimore. Not kidding. Driving through it is really weird, you see all these white kids sitting on the stoops.

It's "weird" that in a country of 300+ million people that there is areas with poor white people?

You watch way to many movies.

Baltimore is the heroin capital of the US, not surprising.

dyna mo 03-07-2016 08:25 AM

Also, Sanders never stated that comment in the op about Trump supporters.

Even prior this comment, it was obvious that this disgusting traitor puts everyone else in front of his own people. Talk trash about own people, prioritize others instead. Disgusting peace of trash.

I am sorry the ''white trash'' feels left out :1orglaugh
They must be pissed of at trailer parks and Walmarts all across America. </sarcasm>

Poor choice of words maybe.
FYI, he was speaking near downtown city of Flint -- no shortage of ''white trash'' near Whiting Auditorium.

Interesting that both the Republican and Democrat Debates were in heavy minority populated area in Michigan -- Downtowns in the City of Detroit and City of Flint ...

BlackCrayon 03-07-2016 09:50 AM

maybe he shouldn't just look at biased opinions of the black lives matters protesters as in their black bubble fail to realize that all those things happen to white people every day too. most of them have happened to me as a young white man in rural canada.

sperbonzo 03-07-2016 10:00 AM

What he should have said, is that no one in the USA knows what it's like to be poor. The middle class in the US is still in the top 8% of the world population, and the very poorest of the poor are still in the top 32% on the planet.

Even though downtown Detroit is populated by Africans aren't all/most of the arenas, convention centers, conference halls located in downtown? I mean that is the usual layout of most of the cities, you can not usually hold massive meeting in suburbia, not only due to lack of huge halls, bit also logistics - downtown is where the action is at. And Detroit is the biggest city after all, in case you would say - they could have organized in some smaller city.

Rochard 03-07-2016 10:10 AM

White people don't know what it's like to be poor?

So when I was seventeen and living in my car and didn't have money for gas no less food, I was still rich and entitled?

plenty of Americans know what it's like to be poor. it makes zero sense to compare poverty in America to someone in the desert in Africa. $2/day here = 0

Not poverty in terms of dollars per day, poverty in terms of access to any kind of services at all.... starving to death with no access to water or medical care, no chance of shelter, etc, etc, etc... At one point, after the army, I was homeless for about 7 months with no family or friends to help me, and yet, having lived in a bunch of places around the world, I can tell you that people in the US have no idea what poverty, as the rest of the world know it, is like.

Well... I haven't only "traveled" I've lived in a bunch of different countries, but when you put it that way, apparently my point is that you don't actually understand the difference between poor in the US and poor in terms of the vast majority of humans on the planet.

But hey, each to his own I guess....

Hope they had heavy police protection down there after the ''show'' let out.

They (R) might have found smaller a location in adjacent Oakland or Macomb Counties aka: Suburbia. The Fox Theater is huge 5,000 seats, an historic building, I saw the first release of "Zulu" there with my dad when I was a kid (a certain irony there). ^Africans LOL WTF?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Auditorium
Welch Auditorium on the other side of the state has 3,800 seats and is in a prime Republican dominated area of the state of Michigan. This was a decision of the RNC and they are in fantasy land it they think the City of Detroit was much interested is what the candidates had to say.

Bernie would have been happy to have had the Democrat Debate in Ann Arbor where the U of M is in; Washetenaw County 50 miles from Detroit and 45 miles from Flint.

The "white" poor experience can be even bleaker. Rural poor are isolated as far as any type of social services and transportation assistance.

he was trying to point to police racism and a broken criminal justice system's treatment of blacks, he concludes his answer with that summary. it wasn't necessarily about poor people.

his overall point is he wants to reform the for profit prison system and end institutionalized racism.

lofty goals, yes,but attainable and needed. i can understand how he might make some mistakes in a debate about such a complex and heavy topic.

Indeed...try living in a country where your skin color is associated with privilege and success and yet be an outsider of that very group. Much of the USA white population is like that.

Case in point:

It should also be kept in mind that making sweeping statements for a country with 300 million people and a vast range of different living conditions that greatly vary from region to region is not possible with any accuracy that would stand up to scrutiny.

To say there is no poor white people is absolutely not true. Don't try and make excuses
for what he should have said or what he meant to say. I don't believe that he believes what he's saying. He's just trying to secure the black vote. What a fucking idiot. I can't wait until Trump is elected and this country get's back on track. :2 cents:

i'm not making excuses for Bernie Sanders. I'm simply trying to understand what he is trying to say, not misunderstand what he is trying to say. when watching his entire answer it's very clear his points are re: police racism and the for-profit and broken criminal justice/prison system.

just like i can get where Trump is coming from when he says some of the things he says. i don't necessarily agree with them, in fact, i don't agree with a lot of them. i do happen to agree with Bernie Sanders that we have a cop problem in America and a for-profit prison problem as well.

No he hit is spot on.

In the 60s, I was a full-blown hippy and lost count of the times I was stopped and searched for drugs.

We hear of countless times when Blacks are pulled over for the slightest of reasons or just suspicions and the police have no real evidence.

Walk around with a crowbar and a bag containing metal objects and see how far you get before being stopped. A person can't change their colour.

Oh...Bull Fucking Shit there is no cop problem. The Whole "Black Lives Matter" movement is a bunch of Crap. "Hands up don't shoot" never happened. 99.5 % of Arrests don't result in fatal shootings by Police officers but the race baiters like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson want you to believe it's open season on the black man. They act like white cops are hunting down African American men and shooting them for no reason which is completely false. Yes, there is a few bad apples here and there but it's not the epidemic African Americans make it out to be. If you don't want to get shot by Police don't act like a fucking idiot and resist arrest or try to grab a cops gun and charge at him like Michael Brown in Ferguson. If they really care about black lives why don't they seem to care about all the black on black crime in Chicago? Black lives only seem to matter when shot by a White Officer. Give me a break. So Sick of this False narrative.
